When I saw that this book covered "The Golden Age of British Horror Films from 1956 to 1976" I was quite excited at the prospect of discovering more about the films that have been the mainstay of my interest in horror films that began in 1965. I have a lot of books that include the same films, but they are not dedicated to British films or to a specific time period, so I hoped that this would be the definitive volume on the subject.

This book has a good selection of stills, some of which I had not seen before, and it is well written. The synopses and reviews of the 319 films are concise and accurate, but I think they are a bit too concise for a book at this price. I was hoping for a more detailed review and some information about the films that I had not read elsewhere. This was rarely the case.

Unless you are a newcomer, and want a book that gives a reasonable introduction to the subject, you won't learn much from this book that you don't already know.

The star rating is a bit restrictive - I would say 4 stars for the newcomer and only 2 for someone looking to increase their knowledge, an average of 3 stars.

This is a tremendous work in scope, ambition, and execution. There is an insight shown here which has traditionally been lacking in books on pocket billiards, and it's yet another reason why Mr. Capelle owns the genre in my opinion. I have noticed an immediate improvement in my play as a result of this material. A Review of `Break Shot Patterns'

The greatest asset in Phil Capelle's book `Break Shot Patterns' is that it increases our awareness to the end game in straight pool. A Talmudic dictim states "If there is no awareness, whence distinctions?" (Berachot 5:2) Alternatively stated, whether in life or 14.1 Continuous, if a problem or issue lies below the radar screen it is almost impossible to improve it or fix it. Only when issues ascend to the level of heartfelt consciousness do they become amenable to favorable solutions. Capelle's text drills that message home in multimedia format. The reader sees the information in diagrams, in numbers, in text, and in actual video images ( a CD is included with the book) of professional matches. With multiple examples and constant repetition Phil's work reinforces basic notions necessary for high level straight pool play. Think ahead, execute with precision, and entertain options becomes the mantra. The dedicated reader will not forget these concepts. And with practice the mantra becomes embedded and ingrained. Ultimately, and somewhat ironically, the lessons also descend back to the level of the subconscious mind. At that point a sense of wholeness and completion is attained--high runs ensue.

The book also makes significant other contributions. For starters, the organizational structure is innovative. Capelle historically reviews the actual closing patterns from famous professionals as they practice their craft. In each case the reader follows the play in the accompanying video CD while the corresponding text analyzes the action. The written word is in perfect sync with the movie style format. Second, meticulously drawn diagrams illustrating the ball position from the matches
challenge the reader to solve the puzzle on the table--just as the pros did during competition. Carefully scrutinizing their choices, and usually providing options, Capelle takes his audience step by step on the final journey of a straight pool rack. In this fashion the reader is given a double dose of the information--visually and conceptually. Finally, the author's thorough attention to detail makes the text even more interesting. No nuance misses his eye as he comments on the fine particulars on the player performances. In one instance he notes the player's elbow position after cue contact, in another the number of inches the ball has traveled from the most optimal position, and in another he calculates the stroke speed average
for the shots played.

Fine teachers see the details their students can't perceive. As illustrated by this book the `gain' of Phil Capelle's screen is set to `high.'

Not bad - the CD could be better though. What pisses me off is they show the pros getting to the end of a rack in straight pool, but THEY DON'T SHOW THEM BREAKING THE NEXT RACK!! What's up with that!!

Unveiling Love

Oh my! What a rollercoaster ride, Barrington and Amora take you through a wide range of emotions. At times I was angry at them and at times I wanted to scream at them. But you still feel the love they have for each other, even though mistrust is prevalent and seeking to destroy them. You will also see how fear can keep someone in bondage and cause someone to make decisions that are detrimental to them. They have so many misconceptions about each other, but there is hope. Barrington needs to keep trusting, depending and seeking God for his marriage. His simple prayers are amazing. Amora needs to realize that she is one of God's precious gems, she may see herself as damaged goods, but God sees His princess. An amazing story, I love books that feature married couples and how they overcome the things that try to destroy them.

Great read!

Barrington and Amora are back! Vanessa Riley never disappoints me! She gives you a great love story with suspense!! Her characters are so complex but relatable, how she does that I have no idea LOL The couple are at a crossroads, It's s like they reverse roles since the 1st book. Amora to me was lost, hurt, damaged which is understandable but in this book she her insecurities made me want to shake her. In the first book you see a little bit of fire in her trying to break through but this 2nd book it shows up and disappears so quick you can't enjoy the real Amora! New characters are introduced with the old and I can honestly say I have no idea what to expect which makes Vanessa Riley an awesome writer in my opinion. But my favorite character would have to be Barrington, he is funny and confident in his abilities Except when it comes to his wife! He disguises his wounds way better than Amora but they are there and they are deep! I can not wait to see what happens next... Barrington has got me scared LOL... Because I am clueless on who he and Amora can trust....I received this book free from Gallium Optronics Publishing as part of their Book Review program in exchange for a honest review. Unveiling Love: A Regency Romance (A London Regency Romantic Suspense Tale Book 2) written by Vanessa Riley, is a great second episode to this series. We are following Amora and Barrington Norton through the struggles that they finally figured out they had in the first episode and now Amora has come to the point that she is tired of fighting for her marriage and her sanity, but Barrington wants to fight enough for both of them. Can they actually make this work? I wanted to reach into the book and cheer them on while they endure each day of struggles. Can’t wait to read the next episode of this story and find out how they end up and if this monster who has caused these problems is finally caught or if they will have to deal with these struggles the rest of their married life. I was gifted this book in exchange for my honest review.

About the Author
Kevin is Professor of Human Geography and is the School of Environment's Director of External Relations and the Faculty's Director of cities@manchester at the University of Manchester. He is a geographical political economist with interests in urban politics and policy on the one hand, and work and employment on the other. His current work explores urban policies to see where they come from, how they travel, where they end up and what these journeys mean for the cities the policies pass through. Theoretically, this involves rethinking what is meant by the urban in urban politics, as elements of different places are assembled and reassembled to constitute particular urban political realms. Methodologically, this involves doing fieldwork in a range of sites inside and outside of the cities that are the objects of study, literally seeking to reveal the circuits, networks and webs in and through which policies are moved. His co-edited book (with Eugene McCann) Mobile Urbanism: Cities and Policymaking in the Global Age (Minnesota University Press) was published in 2011. He is currently exploring the constitution of financial 'models' that have emerged in different areas of the world and that have been circulating as a means of funding infrastructure in the current economic condition.

PUT IN THE WORK AND GET THAT YES!!!

The Book of YES is not a book to be read, it is a book to be mastered. The book is divided into two parts, the first is a concise introduction to Kevin as a Yes Master and the second part are the scripts to be mastered. I didn't exactly know how and why it even mattered how these scripts worked. But, when you actually have a script role play session with someone and then you realize that the upswing and downswing of your voice really matter, you start to realize the one simple fact that PRACTICE IS EVERYTHING to get that successful listing. Kevin's scripts have carefully chosen words and phrases that would get you to that YES; then, he leaves it up to you to use your voice using those exact words and phrases and I think THAT is when this book really ADDS VALUE to any real estate agent's life.

Most listeners will enjoy multiple segments at a sitting because they become addictive once their richness becomes obvious. The authors draw from seven fields of knowledge--history, literature, philosophy, mathematics and science, religion, fine arts, and music--and their choices are impressive for their range and depth. The two narrators, Helen Litchfield and Oliver Wyman, could not be better suited to this endeavor. As they mostly alternate entire segments, the contrast of tone and personality will keep listeners' attention stirred but not shaken. Their performances are so sturdy and appropriate that most people won't even be aware of the extraordinary talent and professionalism they embody. Very good, but Religion section lacking

Wonderful for night time reading, good variety of topics, quick way to boost your knowledge. My only criticism is in the Religion category, which is almost entirely Christian based rather than equal time to all the major religions. In this country most people are generally familiar with the Bible and Christian stories, this would have been better giving more information on other religions.

Surprisingly good

This book covers a very broad range of topics with only page per topic, so I didn't expect much and prepared myself for a superficial treatment. But being the generalist that I am, I was obligated to give the book a try anyway.

I'm pleasantly surprised by how the good this book is. Having only one page per topic is of course still a serious limitation, but the authors make efficient use of each page and do about as good a job as anyone could. The range of topics is broad and interesting, the information is (almost always) accurate, the insights are useful and sometimes impressive, and the overall writing quality is consistently high.

As other reviewers have noted, one flaw of the book is that the font size is too small, and I'm surprised that the editors let that go through. It wasn't really a problem for me, but it may be a fatal flaw for readers with vision problems.

Another semi-criticism is that it's not clear that this book is ideally suited for any particular audience. For readers who aren't already well read, the fragmented and jumping-around format of the book may inhibit understanding and retention (but of course the book can be read more than once to help remedy that). And for readers who are already well read, the book will be more of a review, so they may not learn much, although I did manage to pick up some useful new tidbits despite extensive prior reading on many topics.

Even with the caveats noted above, I still definitely recommend this book to readers who are oriented towards broad generalist learning. The book is a quality resource for that purpose, and there aren't many alternatives to choose from (The Bedside Baccalaureate: A Handy Daily Cerebral Primer to Fill in the Gaps, Refresh Your Knowledge & Impress Yourself & Other Intellectuals is another good choice).

Not only an "intellectual" book, also a practical one

This is not only an "intellectual" book, it is also a practical one. It is easy to keep up with a single page per day, each of which is labeled with the day of the week, and takes only a few minutes to read.

Whether your first time through this material or a review, you will learn and be reminded of much general knowledge that educated people know and casually refer to in normal conversation. For those who are naturally curious, the material is interesting and fun to know - and those who think they are not "naturally curious" may find out they actually are. You may be amazed how fun learning this material can be when it's not being forced on you in excessive quantities by a teacher or professor!

It is said that most books come to nothing, so, as a matter of probability, I suppose this one will too. However in going through it the feeling is hard to escape that this could become one of the memorable ones of our time. It is an exceptionally good read with mind-boggling concepts, and in addition packed full of interesting information.
