An angry, long-winded tirade
By MuzikJunky
Shahrazad Ali, controversial author of such books as "The Blackman's Guide to Understanding the Blackwoman" and "How Not to Eat Pork (Or Life without the Pig)," offers us this supposed survival guide for Black people living in the USA. Using her Nation of Islam-influenced beliefs, the author quizzes the reader about how one lives in the USA. The book is presented in the form of a multiple-choice test, and one's score, from answering the various questions about history, lifestyle, and culture, determines whether the reader is living as a slave. Unfortunately, this book is laughable at best.

Ms. Ali provides no evidence whatsoever to back up her claims. She presents her material as fact--without a single bit of research--and yet she drops the names of such classical Afrocentric thinkers as Molefi Kete Asante and Cheikh Anta Diop. Do not confuse Ali's anger with scholarship. The Nation of Islam and other Black nationalist organizations must not be mistaken for Afrocentricity, a legitimate philosophical discipline.

Furthermore, while Ms. Ali attempts to be universal with her beliefs, it is evident that this form of writing is a most American phenomenon, in both flavor and presentation. If you are interested in classical Afrocentric philosophy and scholarship, there are many books available, including those of the authors mentioned above, that will satisfy your curiostity.

Don't Waste Your Time!
By Andre M.
This book continues Sharazad Ali's sad tradition of whacked out, mean spirited pseudoscience and pseudohistory that appeals only to extremely bitter and half educated African-American social rejects looking for an outlet for their misdirected anger.
Essentially, the book is a series of quizzes that imply that any Black American who has any positive encounter with Whites are still slaves. One particularly outrageous Q&A states that any Black person who laughes at a White man's joke is still a slave (so does this mean that I belong in the cotton patch for laughing at Jakcie Gleason and the Honeymooners)?
A good subtitle of this book (as well as Sharazad's other epics of nonsense) should be "The Miseducation of a Negro" (with apologies to Carter G. Woodson).

Ready, Steady, Go!: The Smashing Rise and Giddy Fall of Swinging London, by Shawn Levy

It’s the summer of 1966... The fundamental old ways: chastity, rationality, harmony, sobriety, even democracy: blasted to nothing or crumbling under siege. The city glows. It echoes. It pulses. It bleeds pastel and fuzzy, spicy, paisley and soft. This is how it's always going to be: smashing clothes, brilliant music, easy sex, eternal youth, the eyes of everybody, everyone's first thought, the top of the world, right here, right now: Swinging London.

Shawn Levy has a genius for unearthing the secret history of popular culture. The Los Angeles Times called King of Comedy, his biography of Jerry Lewis, "a model of what a celebrity bio ought to be–smart, knowing, insightful, often funny, full of fascinating insiders' stories," and the Boston Globe declared that Rat Pack Confidential "evokes the time in question with the power of a novel, as well as James Ellroy's American Tabloid and better by far than Don DeLillo's Underworld."

In Ready, Steady, Go! Levy captures the spirit of the sixties in all its exuberance. A portrait of London from roughly 1961 to 1969, it chronicles the explosion of creativity–in art, music and fashion–and the revolutions–sexual, social and political–that reshaped the world. Levy deftly blends the enthusiasm of a fan, the discerning eye of a social critic and a historian's objectivity as he re-creates the hectic pace and daring experimentation of the times–from the utter transformation of rock 'n' roll by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones to the new aesthetics introduced by fashion designers like Mary Quant, haircutters like Vidal Sassoon, photographers like David Bailey, actors like Michael Caine and Terence Stamp and filmmakers like Richard Lester and Nicolas Roeg to the wild clothing shops and cutting-edge clubs that made Carnaby Street and King's Road the hippest thoroughfares in the world.

Spiced with the reminiscences of some of the leading icons of that period, their fans and followers, and featuring a photographic gallery of well-known faces and far-out fashions, Ready, Steady, Go! is an irresistible re-creation of a time and place that seemed almost impossibly fun.

From Publishers Weekly
The 1960s in Swinging London brought about a sudden a wave of bob cuts, mod struts, pink-shirted blokes and Scotch-and-cokes. Had it not happened, "nothing nothing of the modern world we share could have been the way it is," writes Levy (Rat Pack Confidential). Sure, the American journalist/film critic admits, there were youthquakes at other points and in other cities, but this was "a cultural paradigm" that erased the classes and embraced freedom of expression, exploration and entertainment. The book, which lifts its title from the era's what's-hot-now! TV hit, spotlights the places and the faces who made dowdy London fabulous: The Snapper, photographer David Bailey, credited as first on the scene; The Crimper, hair liberator Vidal Sassoon; The Draper, Mary Quant, a fearless clothes designer; The Loner, Brian Epstein, who found his calling and when he found the Beatles. "For a few years, the most amazing thing in the world was to be British, creative and young." In three main sections structured loosely around the decade's rise, saturation and dark demise, Levy deftly correlates its many moods with such markers as the latest Beatles album, nightclub or drug first it was booze, then amphetamines, pot, LSD, heroin. An invigorating book, it's packed with can't-miss material on the skirt-chasing escapades of actor flatmates Terence Stamp and Michael Caine; the acid party that jailed two Stones and one famous art dealer; the reaction of London musicians to the coming of the "prophet of their downfall," Jimi Hendrix from the States. Levy has gleaned his insights from interviews and from books, but the book reads as if he'd lived the era himself.

From Library Journal
Levy (King of Comedy: The Life and Art of Jerry Lewis), a film critic at the Oregonian who has contributed to other major newspapers, here delivers an intriguing look at pop culture. Levy explores the rise of London from drab postwar center to the hippest city in the world by the 1960s. He writes from the perspective of the people who brought it to prominence: fashion photographer David Bailey and his wife, model Jean Shrimpton; the Beatles, provincial rockers turned clean-cut popsters; the Rolling Stones, or "anti-Beatles," middle-class youth turned blue collar terrors; pop singer/model Marianne Faithfull; hair stylist and former Israeli soldier Vidal Sassoon; actors Terrence Stamp and Michael Caine; and a constellation of other stars. Levy traces the growth of the London scene from a small group of dissolute aristocrats and tough East Enders to its fall as a victim of its own success and the emerging psychedelic movement imported from the United States. Although the treatment is popular rather than scholarly, both public and academic libraries will find the book useful to patrons wanting to learn more about 1960s culture, as well as those who want to know why their parents and grandparents laugh so hard at the "Austin Powers" films. A Time and Place the Likes of Which We'll Not See Again
By Robert Moore
This is a fun, fascinating, engrossing portrait of one of the most exciting moments of the past several decades: London in the sixties. I think of the sixties, especially the sixties of London, as a kaleidoscope, a never ending swirl of colors and images. And just as it is impossible to capture a kaleidoscope in a single image, so it is impossible to express fully in one book the Swinging London of the sixties. READY, STEADY, GO! is a series of snapshots rather than a precise replication, but while it fails, of course, to do the period full justice, neither are the images in any sense not accurate reflections of what happened.
Shawn Levy's skills and orientation are primarily those of the biographer, and READY, STEADY, GO! is largely a series of mini-biographies that taken together contain the gist of his story. Most of the story that Levy is intent to tell is found in his recounting of the lives and careers in that decade of a few key individuals: photographer David Bailey and his superstar model Jean Shrimpton; fashion innovator Mary Quant and hair styling revolutionary Vidal Sassoon; actor Terence Stamp; Brian Epstein and the group he pushed to fame, the Beatles; Andrew Loog Oldham and the Stones, especially Mick Jagger; art dealer and promoter Robert Fraser; the unlikely superstar model Twiggy; the person who is one of the great symbols, victims, and survivors of the sixties, Mariane Faithful (read her marvelous autobiography FAITHFULL); and a supporting cast of dozens. While most of the emphasis of the book is on personalities, there is also a strong emphasis on the places they went. Levy does a marvelous job of highlighting the places all these souls went to mingle, to party, to have fun, and to be seen. The nightclubs, the restaurants, the sometimes bizarre clothing stores, all receive their fair share of attention.
While Levy mainly focuses on telling the stories of the main personalities of the period, he doesn't neglect completely the larger scene. He begins the book by describing how one thing that made the sixties possible was the fact that the youth of the time were beneficiaries of the first economic boom to follow WW II, and for the first time in decades, people had money to spend on more than merely life's necessities. He also discusses how the fashions and styles developed by what was a cultural elite sifted down to the masses, and how the ideas and trends were transformed in the migration. I have to say, however, that I found this aspect of the book to be somewhat lean. I would have liked to know a great deal more about how the sixties influenced and impacted kids as a whole. Instead of delving into this aspect in any depth, he instead continually skirts back to his core characters.
The first half of the book, about the "smashing rise" of Swinging London is, as might be expected, for more interesting and enjoyable than the second half, which chronicles first the mass popularization and more-or-less institutionalization of the trends, and then the gradual dissolution of the entire scene. The "giddy fall" derives from a number of factors, though an unhealthy number of them would seem to be drug-related. Tara Browne's death in a single car crash (immortalized in the Beatles' "A Day in the Life"); the bust of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Robert Fraser for drug possession and use; the decline and deaths of Brian Epstein and Brian Jones; the shattering of relationships as people become more and more involved in drugs; and the death of Jimi Hendrix were all more or less brought about by the increasingly large role that drugs came to play in the scene. In particular, Levy emphasizes the way in which the extensive use of LSD began to put a damper on things, as it drove people more and more into themselves and away from others.
I would have like to seen greater detail on the legacy of Swinging London. In a very real sense, it is still very much with us. Many of the clothes we wear, much of the music we listen to, the way we wear our hair. We owe much of the fabric of ours lives to London of the sixties. Still, this is a marvelous visit back to the most exciting time and place of the past half decade.

The author speaks about his methods
By Shawn Levy
Just to clear up a point of confusion, there are more than 40 original first-person interviews in this book, with people as diverse as Terence Stamp, Michael Caine, Lynn Redgrave, Bill Wyman, David Puttnam, Vidal Sassoon, Mary Quant, Ian McKellen, Michael Apted, Rita Tushingham, John Boorman, Woody Allen, Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda and assorted restauranteurs, gallery and nightclub owners, models, editors, photographers, musicians, haberdashers and so on. Yes, I did rely heavily on previously published materials -- and I explain how much and why in the acknowledgements. But there is scarcely a page without a quote or bit of information gleaned from one of these interviews. It just seemed to me that the vast ocean of information out there ought not to be ignored if it could give a clear picture of the period. Sorry if I sound a little thin-skinned, but when people take the book to task for its methodology and simply get their facts wrong, it can make you a tad edgy.
Anyway, hope you like the book.
PS: Since I couldn't post these comments without ascribing a star rating, I assigned four stars, which was the average of the previous reviewers' comments.

Great Book, But With Some Depth Missing
By Dee Dee Remote
I'm in complete agreement with the previous reviewer...while I enjoyed this book, I would have appreciated more comprehensive coverage of some of the lesser-known figures and incidents of the time. In addition to this title and the aforementioned FAITHFULL, I'd highly recommend Mick Farren's GIVE THE ANARCHIST A CIGARETTE--an astonishingly vivid, articulate and hilarious portrait of the more bohemian/hippie end of late-'60s London. There's also another London-in-the-'60s book I've been on the lookout for entitled DAYS IN THE LIFE by Jonathan Green.

Now I'll put Barbara Mor and THE GREAT COSMIC MOTHER as the best and most important book ...
By annonymous
Do you mind me mentioning that this book could change the world culture and save all of us if people would just read it? Used to think Riane Eisler's SACRED PLEASURE was the most important book I've ever read. Now I'll put Barbara Mor and THE GREAT COSMIC MOTHER as the best and most important book I've ever read.
Mor takes us back to the real, true human culture and nature --- about how women originated human social life --- as opposed to how men have destroyed human existence over the last several thousand years.
Imagine how futile it is to try and re-orient human relationships and society wi†hin the context of male dominated 'cults' namely Judaism, Christianity and Islam. We all should read Mor's book and have the courage to stand up for all that she teaches us.

Unique twist for me. A very good beginning to a new series.
By Detra Fitch
Dr. Megan Chase is a counseling psychologist and has a new radio call-in show. Though Megan hates the show's motto, her boss insists Megan begin each call by stating that she will slay their personal demons. But her clients are not the only ones that seem to believe the motto, so do the personal demons. Although Megan does not know it at first, she is the only human without a personal demon on her shoulder, whispering in her ear. This fact, coupled with her being psychic, makes her the target of an army of tiny personal demons and of a soul-sucker known as The Accuser.

Enter the fire demon called Greyson "Grey" Dante. He represents a demon family that want to use Megan as a way to gain more power. Grey becomes her most powerful ally against the creatures, including zombies and vampires, out to kill her. Grey has three demon bodyguards (named Malleus, Maleficarum, and Spud) constantly at her side, as well as a witch named Tera teaching her how to focus her psychic abilities. To top it all off, Megan's boss has a tabloid reporter, Brian Stone, writing an article about "Dr. Demon Slayer", who has been digging into Megan's past and finding things she does not want to talk about.

***** I found this story to have a unique twist on the over done subjects of demons and psychics. If there are other stories out there like this one, I've never read it. A fanciful walk on the creepy and dark side that will keep you up reading long into the night. A great beginning to a new series. *****

Hated the characters too much to continue reading
By J. Finn
First of all, I LOVED the Downside Ghosts series by the same author, which is why I started reading this book.

This book is NOTHING like the Downside Ghosts series, and I could only get through about 1/3 of it before I finally just put it down for good. It's not very well-written, but more importantly, I HATE all of the characters.

The main character is a born victim. By the time I put it down, about 4 different men (that she barely knew) had grabbed her arm so hard it hurt and all she could say was "You're hurting me." Everyone is angry at her, but I'm not sure why. She doesn't seem to either, but apologizes anyway. People walk into her house and she wonders vaguely who they are and wishes they would leave. People say the most terrible things to her, and she thinks about how hurt and upset she is that they're saying them. She has no redeeming qualities, and she's the heroine of the story! I like flaws (her Downside heroine is a drug addict & liar... but at least she's likeable, sharp, funny, and you're pulling for her), but this was just too much. I couldn't suspend disbelief enough for her to be believable (and I was totally willing to go with the whole demon angle).

She was so passive that I just couldn't take it anymore and had to put it down. That combined with the utterly ridiculous plotline that demons have misunderstood that the show's tagline is just that... a tagline. And that she's NOT an actual demon slayer. I knew about this plot before I read the book, obviously, and I assumed there would be some humor in regards to it or that it would be better explained why the demons are that stupid. But no. Are we to believe they take EVERYTHING literally and they they're also gunning for Sarah Michelle Geller because she played Buffy?

I don't understand how this book got so many good reviews. I love PNR. I usually love anything paranormal. I love Urban Fantasy, sci-fi, you name it. But not this. I highly recommend the author's other series as well as the Darkfever series by Moning.

Devilishly Delighful Urban Fantasy
By Mark Henry
Personal Demons is a supersexy urban fantasy, some might say paranormal romance, but like all good demon fiction, the sin of lust takes precedence over anything as wholesome as that other L word. Megan Chase, psychic therapist (though the psychic part is a secret), is up to her ears in crazy clients, radio station politics and zombies! After a near fatal attack, she's let in on a little secret: those personal demons she claims to slay on her radio talk show? Um..a wee bit miffed. It seems she's been marked for death, which is really bad timing because she's being tailed by a reporter hot for a story and a demon hot for some tail. To make things right, Megan must do battle with the spawn of Satan (both in and out of the bedroom) and the skeletons in her own closet.

Kane serves up a malevolently entertaining entry into the urban fantasy genre, the action is fierce and the sex is scorching, her characters are well drawn--Megan, in particular, is so engaging you'll be missing her from the second you turn that final page--and the story clips along with the urgency of a freeway car chase.

Highly recommended!

A Monster Calls: Inspired by an idea from Siobhan Dowd, by Patrick Ness

An unflinching, darkly funny, and deeply moving story of a boy, his seriously ill mother, and an unexpected monstrous visitor.

At seven minutes past midnight, thirteen-year-old Conor wakes to find a monster outside his bedroom window. But it isn't the monster Conor's been expecting-- he's been expecting the one from his nightmare, the nightmare he's had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments. The monster in his backyard is different. It's ancient. And wild. And it wants something from Conor. Something terrible and dangerous. It wants the truth. From the final idea of award-winning author Siobhan Dowd-- whose premature death from cancer prevented her from writing it herself-- Patrick Ness has spun a haunting and darkly funny novel of mischief, loss, and monsters both real and imagined.

Review
There's no denying it: this is one profoundly sad story. But it's also wise, darkly funny and brave, told in spare sentences, punctuated with fantastic images and stirring silences. Past his sorrow, fright and rage, Conor ultimately lands in a place - an imperfect one, of course - where healing can begin. A MONSTER CALLS is a gift from a generous storyteller and a potent piece of art.
—The New York Times

A nuanced tale that draws on elements of classic horror stories to delve into the terrifying terrain of loss. . . . Ness brilliantly captures Conor's horrifying emotional ride as his mother's inevitable death approaches. In an ideal pairing of text and illustration, the novel is liberally laced with Kay's evocatively textured pen-and-ink artwork, which surrounds the text, softly caressing it in quiet moments and in others rushing toward the viewer with a nightmarish intensity.A poignant tribute to the life and talent of Siobhan Dowd and an astonishing exploration of fear.
—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Profoundly moving, expertly crafted tale... a singular masterpiece, exceptionally well-served by Kay's atmospheric and ominous illustrations... tackles the toughest of subjects by refusing to flinch, meeting the ugly truth about life head-on with compassion, bravery, and insight.
—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

A brilliantly executed, powerful tale.
—School Library Journal (starred review)

Ness twists out a resolution that is revelatory in its obviousness, beautiful in its execution, and fearless in its honesty. Kays artwork keeps the pace, gnawing at the edges of the pages with thundercloud shadows and keeping the monster just barely, terribly seeable.
—Booklist (starred review)

A masterpiece about life and loss that will stay with the reader long after the final page is turned.
—Library Media Connection (starred review)

A fiercely beautiful book about love and grief.
By Wendy Darling
In the dark of night, when the house is still, what fears creep into your heart? For Conor O'Malley, his nightmares take the shape of a very old and very dangerous monster who visits him every night at seven minutes past midnight. He's half-convinced that these must be dreams of his fevered mind. But how can they be, when the visits are so vivid and when he finds physical evidence of the monster's existence the next day?

Conor's nightmares begin shortly after his mother starts her treatments for cancer. He's also dealing with a father who lives far away and is engrossed with his new family, a brisk and determined grandma who doesn't understand him, and schoolmates who don't seem to see him anymore. As readers learn more and more about Conor's story and the terrible monster who comes to visit, it is impossible not to feel worry and fear and sadness for this boy, whose must shoulder problems that have toppled many adults before him. But even in his anger and pain, Conor's defiant spirit shows flashes of dry humor and painful hopefulness that are difficult to witness, but make him impossibly endearing.

A Monster Calls is a children's book, but it's a children's book in the way that Roald Dahl or Shel Silverstein wrote children's books--that is, the surface stories are certainly well-written and compelling, but underneath that are the themes of confusion and loneliness and sadness that elevate them to timeless works of literature. And while A Monster Calls chooses to confront its demons more literally than some other books may, it does so with such fierce intelligence and ease that it never feels didactic or forced.

This an incredible book about the enormous burdens of responsibility and grief and loss. I read most of it with anxiety in my heart and as the story intensified, the ache in my throat got worse and worse. By the time I reached the end, hot tears were dripping onto the last two pages, and continued to fall as I immediately read those pages again, and as I read them yet again.

But more than anything else, I felt a great deal of love as I was reading this. Love for Conor, love for his mum, love for his grandma, and love for everyone who has ever experienced a profound loss. This is such a beautiful book, such an important book, and one that I think so many children and so many adults will appreciate. I cannot imagine that there will be another children's book written this year that will provide such a moving experience, or one that will so easily become an instant classic. In just 215 pages, A Monster Calls shatters your heart and then wraps it up tightly again so that you can go and be present in the world as an infinitely wiser, more loving human being.

***Please consider buying the hardcover over the ebook in this case, as the starkly beautiful illustrations add to the reading experience in an integral way.***

A book that will grab onto your heart!
By Heidi
Five stars: This is a haunting, heartbreaking book that will grab onto your heart strings.

A Monster Calls is one of those books that has the ability to break your heart and touch your soul. On the surface it is supposedly a children's book; one where a monster comes roaring to a window one night. A great, old, wild terrible monster but he is not the horrible nightmare Conor O'Malley has been expecting; for you see he has been haunted repeatedly in his nightmares by something far worse. This horror of his dreams is something so cruel and terrifying he dares not acknowledge it. The monster at his window, who is strangely constructed from the ancient yew tree in the graveyard, imparts three different tales to Conor; three tales of truths. The monster warns that when the last tale has been told Conor must tell his own tale. He must confess his great truth, his greatest fear, or be eaten but he cannot reveal to anyone that which is devouring his soul or can he? Besides the monster is just a dream after all but why is his room mysteriously covered with needles and berries from a yew tree?
Thus, the journey begins. The story opens with thirteen year old Conor bearing the crushing toll of his mother's cancer. He slowly watches as the disease ravishes her body, steals her vitality and hair and sucks away her life. Each day he shoulders more and more of a burden too heavy for a boy his age. At school he has become the invisible boy. Everyone is afraid to speak to him, for he is the boy whose mother has cancer. Day in and day out he endures the whispers and looks of pity, surrounded by people, who inadvertently ignore him because they fear saying the "wrong" thing. Conor is screaming inside for anyone to recognize him, even if it means drawing the attention of a bully. He wants desperately just to have some part of his life be normal. He has no one to turn to. His Grandmother is controlling and obsessed with her own troubles so they end up sparring with each other instead of admitting that they are both haunted by the same specter. His father selfishly walked out of Conor's world and into a new existence in America with a wife and infant daughter. He has a life now that does not provide a space for his son. He reappears briefly but he does not offer the refuge Conor seeks. It seems that Conor is alone until the monster storms in through the window.
So what is this monster? The author leaves the interpretation up to the reader. For me the monster is a construct made up of all the agony, fear, loneliness and conflicting emotions that wage in Conor's mind. I saw the three tales as Conor's way of trying to understand some of the issues that plague him. Through Conor's eyes I lived the constant pain and turmoil surrounding his mother's illness. I felt his optimism and I understood his refusal to believe that the medicines might not hold the cure. As the cancer closes in the pain becomes an agonizing vice grip on your heart. There are glimmers of hope but there is always the choking dread. When Conor and the monster reach the end of the saga and he comes to terms with the fear that has been shredding his soul, my heart broke. I cried for Conor and for myself; for I too have faced down that fear and I have seen the eyes of his nightmarish monster. Yes, this book tore my heart but I found relief too. I was glad to know that I shared the same discordant emotions that Conor felt and that these feelings were normal and acceptable. In the end I was comforted as Conor took shelter in the arms of the yew tree; knowing he had faced and conquered his ultimate terror. I know he has found his peace. As have I and hopefully the countless others who have endured this life altering event.

This is a book based on the ideas of Siobhan Dowd, a new, talented voice with such promise. Ultimately she was silenced too early; she died of cancer in 2007. Her first novel was published in 2006. Several award winning works including, A Monster Calls were published posthumously. She had outlined the idea and characters for this book before the cancer snatched her away. Patrick Ness does a tremendous job in completing her work and fulfilling her vision. To me he even brought forth her spirit as I imagined it was her pain and suffering that I witnessed in Conor's mother.
This is a book that speaks to both young and old. I fear the label of a young adult book for this work. This book transcends far beyond a book for youth. It has the ability to touch all of us because at some time in life we all find ourselves facing down the great dread of illness and death. This work will speak differently to everyone who reads it. It is an amazing and powerful piece of literature that everyone should experience. This is a book that gets into your head, brushes your soul and changes you.

Favorite Quotations:

"Stories are wild creatures, the monster said. When you let them loose, who knows what havoc they might wreak."

"Sometimes people need to lie to themselves most of all."

"There is not always a good guy. Nor is there always a bad one. Most people are somewhere in between."

"Belief is half of healing."

"Stories are important, the monster said. They can be more important than anything. If they carry the truth."

"I couldn't hold onto her any more. She got so heavy."

"The answer is that it does not matter what you think, the monster said, because your mind will contradict itself a hundred times each day."

"Your mind will believe comforting lies while also knowing the painful truths that make those lies necessary. And your mind will punish you for believing both."

"You do not write your life with words, the monster said. You write it with actions. What you think is not important. It is only important what you do."

"I wish I had a hundred years," she said, very quietly. "A hundred years I could give to you."

Intense, emotional, unforgettable

STOP.
Seriously, don't read any further if you don't want to know my reaction to this novel.
Because this book will grab your mind, body, heart, and soul.
Okay, I warned you.

A Monster Calls SHOULD be read in one sitting. It's so powerful, so painful that it feels like a gaping wound right where your heart is. I only read one review on Goodreads and I knew I had to pick up this book. The author of that review said she cried and cried. I braced myself.
I picked up this book knowing that it would tear at my heart, make me think. About life. About death. It's a book about holding on and letting go. It's about control and losing control. It's about lies and truths. As I said, I braced myself. Only once did I get misty-eyed. I didn't want to cry. But when I finished the last page I paced my living room floor. Dry-eyed. A book like this MUST impact the reader in some way because seriously if it doesn't, I truly would wonder if stone exists in place of a heart. But the real question is what do you DO with a book like this?
I say gobble it up. Take it in. Hold it close. Then. Let. It. Go. Live life with meaning and purpose. Be kind to others. Be kind to yourself. Work on letting go of old hurts. Turn your dreams into action. Don't just talk. DO! Because all we really have to hold onto is what we do in the here and now. I realize it's not an easy way to live all the time. But this book reminds us that life is precious. We can't waste it. That WE are responsible for finding meaning to our own lives and making something special out of it.
That's how I see it. I did warn you.

Great book about dealing with emotional trauma.
By B. Wolinsky
Miriam Taylor gets right to the point; trauma is a threatening event that a person can’t cope with. The reasons for the inability to cope are wide, but the most prominent one is that it outweighs the patient’s resources. The event is something more powerful than the emotional strength, and when it’s over, it stays with the victim. There are implications with regard to therapy, involving emotional problems, and neuroscientific ones, involving chemicals. The body uses hormones in all functions, and while some can create balance, others can lead to neurosis, elevated heart rates, slow heart rates, and other problems. Persons who’ve suffered emotional trauma are likely to have both.
Gestalt Therapy is widely discussed in this book, because of its focus on the self. Trauma can lead to a kind of disassociation, a feeling that you’re not all there, and the patient can develop feelings of passivity. The Gestalt approach is used to get the patient to examine their personality, and what they want to be versus what they think they are. Is the patient trying to be something he is not, but unable to see it? Is she creating a persona of being more powerful then she is, like a grandiose delusion? Does she think she’s weaker than she is?
One of the case studies involves a 48 year old woman, still traumatized by a rape that occurred 30 years earlier. The rapist was her college professor, and she was still in fear that he’d track her down. The goal of the therapy, in this case, was to examine her relation to the abuser in the present. How old would he be now? Would he be capable of hurting her again? By having the patient examine what she is capable of doing now, with regard to defense, she can work towards overcoming the pain. Though not mentioned in this book, comedian Tom Arnold had a similar problem involving sexual abuse. He claims he was sodomized by a teenage babysitter when he was a child, and that it left him with emotional scars. As an adult, he tracked down the babysitter, now a grown man, and not as physically powerful as Arnold was now. He confronted this man, and it helped him to deal with the anger. He also prevented the man from adopting a child, but that’s another story.
In Chapter 6, Taylor gives a scenario about the response to fear, involving a public melee. She says the following: “imagine you’ve come out of a movie theater, and you see a brawl spill into the street, the mob runs past you, windows get broker, and you duck into a doorway.” Then she proceeds to list the physical symptoms you may have; heart beating fast, sweat, trembling hands, skin feeling hotter or colder. These are all signs of trauma, and as far as “ducking for cover” goes, it would be a decision, or an impulse. Most would rely on impulse, while other would “keep their head” and look for an escape. The one who keeps his head and thinks under pressure is less likely to be traumatized. But not everyone can do this.
With regard to the Chapter 6 scenario, I am reminded of the 20/20 episode titled “If Only I Had a Gun.” The show featured a mock classroom shooting, and a volunteer is given a paintball gun and told to fire on the gunman. The result is that even the armed students would get killed, and the reason is fine motor control. In a panic, you can lose control of your fine motor skills, which might cause you to fumble with the gun. You can lose your fine cognitive skills as well, which could lead you to panic further. While police (I hope) are trained for these situations, the average person is not. That’s why civilians are likely to be traumatized by single violent encounters. As for the police, perhaps repeated violent encounters can lead to trauma?
Trauma was not well understood until recently. I’d wager that a sizeable number of WW2 veterans had it when they returned, as we saw in the case of Ira Hayes (immortalized in the Johnny Cash song.) Audie Murphy, the most decorated veteran, definitely had it. In the 1970’s, a lot of the men living on the Bowery in NYC were alcoholic WW2 vets, and they probably had psychological problems from the war that were never treated. Maybe the treatment just didn’t exist? Or perhaps, as we see in the book “Clinical Manual of Cultural Psychiatry,” which I just reviewed, there was a stigma to therapy. A lot of people see therapy as a thing for the less tough, and they refuse to seek help. The results are anybody’s guess.
