About the Author

Hans Bergsten is the founder of Gefion Software, a company focused on Java services and products based on the J2EE technlogies. Hans has been an active participant in the working groups for both the servlet and JSP specifications from the time they were formed. He also contributes to other related JCP specifications, such as JSP Standard Tag Libraries (JSTL), and helped get the development of the Apache Tomcat reference implementation for servlet and JSP started as one of the initial members of the Apache Jakarta Project Management Committee.

OK Starting Point

This book is an "OK" starting point for someone learning JSF.

Here are some things to be aware of:

1) Does a poor job explaining the lifecycle of a JSF component; he writes the sequence of events out in paragraph style and does not provide diagrams (UML or otherwise) to help with the illustration

2) Constantly switches metaphors as he is explaining JSF; sometimes he will be talking about the implementation view of a JSF component and then other times he will be talking about the application view of a component. It would be better if there were one or two chapters that focused on the "how the heck does this work behind the scenes" and the rest of the book focused on applying JSF.

3) There are syntax errors throughout the examples; this includes the code examples (.jsp examples) and the configuration examples (web.xml and faces-config.xml). To his credit, he constantly references the appendix section for a more complete example. As a reader, I personally don't like flipping back and forth all the time.

4) His coverage of the application (using JSF actions) is very basic (academic). He doesn't go through the academically classified edge-cases, which is disapppointing because those are typically classified as real-world.

5) He forward references way too much; for example he will talk about / use something in say chapter 4, and then states something to the effect "oh, we'll come back to that later, don't worry about it now". From a learning perspective this is terrible. It causes your train of thought to be derailed and you end up asking yourself the question "what does that do?".

On the positive side, the flow does seem to make some sense from a learning perspective. He builds on the foundational concepts and frames the learning in the context of creating a "real-world" application.

I understand this book is a bit out of date (suprises me O'R hasn't encouraged an update). My suggestion is to buy this book used.

Presentation needs work

The book is rich in content and you can definitely learn a lot about JSF. Unfortunately, a good author also needs to be a good teacher and story teller. Reading Bergsten is like listening to Ben Stein or Stephen Hawking talk, you will undoubtedly wish you were doing anything else except this. Things such as changing a diaper or jury duty will become more appealing after reading this book. I stopped once during reading and decided to clean my room instead. That's exactly how exciting it was to read Bergsten.

To give a contrary example, Kevin Yank from sitepoint or Joe Burns from HTMLGoodies are infinitely more fluid and entertaining to read. If you want a book for its content, this is a good book. If you have a crappy attention span like myself, this is a difficult book to read. To give a bit of background on myself (not that anybody cares) I've been a Java programmer for about 6 years so the book isn't above me, its just too dry in my opinion. That's my two cents. Useful...but not in depth

This was a useful book. however within 6 hours I had gotten everything I could out of it. 2 whole chapters are devoted to things that are not directly related to JSF (Servlets and JSP Basics and Setting Up JSF-Mostly just setting up tomcat)
I really liked the book...but it was not very deep. Understandable becasue of the relative newness of JSF. I can imagine not many projects have been done with JSF yet...but there needs to be more on integrating with J2EE and how to really use this technology in a meaningful way. Right now all I can do with it is make a simple little example and not really a whole production application. The book only spends 3 paragraphs talking bout JSF and databases. Then says "That is all I am going to say about databases, because that is all there is to say about databases that is database specific"--That was very dissapointing. The entire chapter about Servlets/JSP would have been much better used showing examples of "best practices" implementing databases.
That said I really appreciate the section on integrating JSF and Struts with Struts-Faces. I can imagine that I will most definately be using this technology as I do a lot of struts development. Thanks Hans.
Also I would have really appreciated a comparison of JSF and ASP.NET. the book pretends like this technology doesn't exist. When in reality JSF is the response from the JCP that was necessitated by ASP.NET.

Miranda Neville grew up in England before moving to New York City to work in Sotheby's rare books department. After many years as a journalist and editor, she decided writing fiction was more fun. She lives in Vermont.

Enjoyable historical romance novella

The Second Seduction of a Lady is a historical novella that introduces a new series by Miranda Neville, The Wild Quartet. Eleanor is a woman firmly "on the shelf" and against the institution of marriage. She occupies her time by visiting relatives and helping out her many cousins. While visiting one of these cousins, Eleanor runs into the man who managed to seduce her and use her years before. Max knew he made mistakes with Eleanor, but he has never gotten over her and he is determined to make the most of his second chance, which proves to be more difficult than he could have anticipated.

I really enjoyed Eleanor's character, I understood her negative feelings about marriage (even though I didn't necessarily agree) and I like that she is an independent woman. She manages to do what she pleases and still be part of society. Neither Eleanor or Max are high up in the Ton, they are people who are easy to relate to. Max proved to be very dedicated to winning Eleanor over and I always love it when a man has to work to win his lady.

The Second Seduction of a Lady is a quick read, but the antics of Eleanor's cousin and Max's attempts to win Eleanor are amusing and enjoyable to read. I did not have any issues with the story, but at the same time it did not amaze me. The story is simple, yet enjoyable and provides a nice prelude to an upcoming series. I enjoyed the writing, the characters, and the story and will likely read book 1 in The Wild Quartet Series, The Importance of Being Wicked, when it debuts in late November.

The Second Seduction of a Lady~

Eleanor Hardwick lives her life the way she wants and thanks to an inheritance from her late mother, she can. If she wants to spend money of fancy bonnets, she will. If she wants to travel, she can. Yet, being the only child of a recluse father is very lonely so her travels often involve visiting her relatives and trying to help in any way she can, welcome or not. Eleanor takes one of her young cousins, Caro, under her wing since her mother is dastardly but her life is thrown into upheaval upon a walk when Eleanor and Caro stumble upon a young man and his guardian. The guardian is Max Quinton, the man who broke her heart five years ago with a cruel bet. Max is delighted to see the only woman who has laid claim to his heart and he is determined to make rights with Eleanor once and for all so he sets about a slow seduction to win her back. Unfortunately, he causes more problems as he uses his charge's interest in Caro to gain information and when this comes to light, the damage is done all over for Eleanor. Will a chase to Gretna Green together be enough to prove that Eleanor is the only one for him?

This novella (which was about sixty percent of my file, the rest were excerpts) is the kickoff to Miranda Neville's upcoming new series and was an enjoyable tale. When Max broke her heart, it cemented her belief that marriage is not for her, especially after witnessing her joyful mother wilt under her fathers boring lifestyle. Now, at the tender age of 30 (I loved that she was a bit older than the norm!), she is determined to live a quiet life by herself and she plans to shove Max away. Max is charming and quiet in his seduction of Eleanor and she finally allows him to explain his side of the bet and together they make great stride to happiness only for it to seem to fall away again. I really enjoyed the secondary romance that also bloomed between Caro and Robert and as Caro is the heroine for the next book (The Importance of Being Wicked) it has made me very anxious as to what is next for her! However, since this novella was about Eleanor and Max, I did sort of feel Caro's problems overtook the storyline a bit and I would have liked a little more courtship between Eleanor and Max with just a bit more of their history. Even in this short novella it has what I expect from Miranda Neville, sharp dialogue, wit, charm, heat and a dash of action. A great kickoff to what is sure to be an amazing series! 3 1/2 stars

Nice love story segues into an introduction to the series. About a 3.3

I thought this a nice, well-balanced introduction to the series. It gave us a story of love renewed, and we met Caro, the heroine of The Importance of Being Wicked (The Wild Quartet Book 1), a novel I recommend. We saw her mother's reprehensible stifling of Caro, making Caro's rebellion inevitable. Interestingly, we also saw the seeds sown by Robert that would eventually cause great heartache for Caro.

The sweet, sometimes funny, love story of Max and Eleanor was a nice vehicle for this introduction, though it was a little slow in places.

I recommend reading this series in order for full understanding of the characters and their stories. I read #3 & #4 first. I think I would have gotten more from those novels had I read in order.

From a critical thinking perspective, this book is definitely worth reading!

Among the many classic strategy formulation books that I have owned & read, I treasure 'Top Management Strategy'.

One of the principal authors of this book is Benjamin Tregoe, who co-founded the Kepner-Tregor outfit around the sixties or so, with Charles Kepner. As a young engineer in the early seventies, I attended their 'Analytic Trouble Shooting' workshop. In the later years as a manager, I had read 'The Rational Manager'. Subsequently, in later years as a senior manager, I again attended their four-day 'Problem Solving & Decision Making' workshop. Their rational thinking processes from their books & workshops had often helped me tremendously in my career path from engineer to manager.

This particular book came into my hands about the time - around the mid-eighties - when I was moving into general management.

A quick glance of the table of contents of the book will give you a rough picture of why I like the book:

- Strategy & Survival;
- Taking Stock of Your Strategic IQ;
- Driving Force & the Nine basic Strategic Areas;
- The Power of the Driving Force;
- Making Strategy Happen;
- The Challenges of Startegic Management;
- Organising to Set Strategy;

In fact, many of the author's strategy ideas have influenced other strategy consultants in later years, including Michel Robert.

This particular book impresses me very much. Unlike many books on strategy formulation, this one points out that there are various paths to success. The secret is to take the route that best fits your business.

Another reader's benefits out of this book during that period of time was the 'Selected Annnotated Biliography' which eventually led me to read a good number of other classic strategy books, including Russel Ackoff's 'A Concept of Corporate Planning', Kenneth Andrews' 'The Concept of Corporate Strategy'; Igor Ansoff's 'Corporate Strategy', just to name a few.

On the whole, the author's writing is crisp, concise & clear. The book has just over 100 pages.

From a critical thinking perspective, this book is definitely worth reading. This is because, by going back to reading the classic strategy books (I call this reading backwards), like this one, you will get a better understanding of what strategy works & what strategy doesn't work.

This book makes you think on what makes you different, focusing on your one and only main Driving Force out of nine options. Long term strategy is not the same as long term planning, the first is what you want to be in the future, the second is how to get there. Being aware of your Strategy and Driving Force, allows you to focus on achiving success.

The authors bring into focus the definition of a business' "driving forces", whether "products offered", "market saturation", "technology" or others. I regret giving my copy of this book away 15 years ago - I could still refer to it today.

A tried and true system that works

I immediately knew I was on the same page as Tom Marquardt when I got to Part I - Stop Biting Your Nails and Start Sharpening Your Claws. This part begins with an exercise that says " I would like you to take 10 minutes, and ten minutes only, and write down the top five items that you worry about and/or are fearful about on a continuous basis in the space provided below." He then proceeds to tell the reader the fears and worries will always be there but he will teach how to neutralize them using his 14 points. Those 14 points consist of the lot of stops, and as I read through them all it reminded me of self-discipline, something easy to stray away from when in fear and doubt.

One analogy I've never heard of before but made so much sense was when Marquardt said "A glass of milk has a longer shelf life than a vacant hotel room." Milk can be kept in the fridge for several weeks and used as needed. However, when today is gone, today's vacant room cannot receive the opportunity of the moment. This of course, can be translated to any service you sell. It's all about maximizing revenue generation - today.

Marquardt also advocates "Go be a leader with walk-around, hands-on management. Forget sending a memo to the associates on how to do it; show them yourself." This is one aspect of running a business I'm adamant about. Creating relationships with your team is crucial and in my opinion, mandatory.

What Marquardt says in "My Little Black Book to Success" is nothing new. However, it's a gentle reminder we all need and being the size the book is, a couple of hours of reading, contemplation and grounding will give us the inspiration to get out of a slump, re-focus on our direction, or make the necessary changes. In our busy lives, combined with the internal fears the media brings to us about the downturn of economy, it's easy to start doubting our direction in business if there is a lull. Marquardt gives us action plans and strategies that work, if you work them.

Sis's skillful pictures emphasize events in the adventures of the orphan Jemmy, kept in his king's palace to be thrashed for the offenses committed by the royal heir, known as Prince Brat. It is forbidden to punish Brat, whose tricks multiply until Jemmy is tempted to escape the daily round of flogging. But the prince himself takes off and forces the whipping boy to go with him. As they get into and out of trouble on the outside, Jemmy hears that he has been accused of abducting Brat. When the prince arranges for their return to the palace, poor Jemmy fears the worst, but things turn out for the best at the story's satisfying close. Colorful types like a thief called Hold-Your-Nose Billy, Betsy and her dancing bear Petunia, et al., increase the fun.

Because Brat has never learned to write and Jemmy can, a couple of prince-nappers decide that Jemmy is the real prince. Chiefly through Jemmy's cleverness, the two escape and return to court. Brat has learned much and changed for the better during his adventures. He winds up calling Jemmy "friend," and he is certain to be a better prince hereafter. This whimsical, readable story delights in the manner of Bill Brittain's books The Wish Giver (1983) and The Devil's Donkey (1981, both Harper). Full-page black-and-white illustrationssomewhat grotesque but always complementaryadd attractiveness to the story. The mistaken identity plot is always a good one: children, even fairly old ones, like disguises and this kind of mix-up. Supplementary characters are well-drawn both by Fleischman and by Sis, so the whole hangs together in basic appeal. Readers could well move from The Whipping Boy to its much longer cousin, Mark Twain's The Prince and the Pauper. Well Told Story, Moves Quickly

This is a well-told story told at a quick pace. As kids read it, they won't even be aware that they're learning English history: whipping boys, dancing bears, coaches, rat catchers, fairs. Jemmy, an orphan, has been made whipping boy to Prince Horace, whom all outside the castle call Prince Brat. Whenever the Prince doesn't do his sums or read his lessons or behave properly, the whipping boy, dressed in finery something like that of the Prince, gets whipped. But Jemmy won't cry out or howl in pain, and this frustrates the Prince.

One night the Prince enters Jemmy's room and commands him to follow: Prince Brat is running away from home. The boys don't get very far at all before they're kidnapped by a pair of bandits, who think that the Prince is, in fact, the Prince. But Jemmy gets them to believe that he, Jemmy, is the real Prince because he can read and write -- Prince Brat has never paid attention to his lessons and can neither read nor write. As the ransom note is being delivered, Jemmy and the Prince escape. Jemmy wants to be on his own and return to the world of being a rat-catcher in the sewers -- which he considers a better existence than being whipping boy to a brat. But the Prince will not stop following Jemmy, and observing what happens. During the course of the escape, both Jemmy and the Prince change. The Prince learns about friendship, and he learns why Jemmy would never cry or howl in pain while being whipped. Jemmy learns that he doesn't want to return to the underground world of sewers where there are no books.

Amazing book!

One of my favorite books of all time! This book made me like reading when I was in the 8th grade and I haven't looked back since! The wording is a little tough, but the story is amazing and the students in my class loved it!

The theme is an old one, but the rich, spoiled prince learns about life's realities for those not so fortunate.
