About the Author

Kevin Avruch is professor of anthropology at George Mason University and faculty member of the university’s Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution. His recent books include two co-edited volumes, Conflict Resolution: Cross-Cultural Perspectives and Critical Essays on Israeli Society. He was a senior fellow at the United States Institute of Peace in 1996–97.

Asking important questions...

Professor Avruch openly acknowledges what the conflict resolution field, among many other social science fields, overlooked for many years: culture. He offers to the average reader an opportunity to consider basic principles in how culture dictates how we all interact. Culture is what people experience on a daily basis and most definitely take for granted. Armed with a new and encompassing understanding, professionals and those who are simply curious may then consider their interactions and situations from different points of views, and hopefully be willing to exchange ideas and experiences more freely and purposefully.

Handy Reference for the International Worker

Professor Kevin Avruch has written a thought provoking and very useful book on the relationship between conflict resolution and culture.

The author outlines how different cultures act and think when it comes to conflict and conflict resolution. For those of us who work in an International organisation, this book is extremely handy, especially for managers. By understanding how conflicts arise and the various approaches differing cultures use to resolve conflict; the reader appreciates the variety in the world's peoples.

He gives an insight into cultural roles in resolution, cultural aspects in negotiation and the issue of power in cultural aspects to conflict resolution.

The book is especially useful for the person living and working abroad and who travels. Reading the book gives important insight into how various cultures see conflict and their various approaches to conflict resolution. I would commend the book to anyone who works in a multi-cultural work environment.Well done, Professor Avruch!

I received a copy of “A Witch's World of Magick” by author Melanie Marquis. I must admit I was very excited! I liked the cover is beautiful and reading the chapter titles intrigued me further. I knew from her book “The Witch's Bag of Tricks” that Melanie Marquis is skilled and adept at what she was writing about.

The author writes in an easy to understand style. She covers extensively subjects and content that I have not seen presented in other book and done so in a fresh manner. Another strength in this book is the extensive footnotes at the bottom of the pages. There are so many metaphysical books available that do not go as deep as I perhaps would like to go in my studies. The footnotes are a wonderful asset to this book for those who would like to pursue deeper and further studies on these wonderful topics.

I also appreciate the different types of magick that she discusses and how to use them. In addition to the history she offers in the introduction I really like the Spells and also the points to ponder at the end of the chapter. I find it very practical and concise. It gives a great opportunity to rethink those things from a different perspective. I found it so informative and learned so much from it. I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

Intermediate Book on witchcraft-Excellent exploration of folklore and folkmagic across the world

The book A witches World of Magick is full of magical practices and concepts from around the world. For this reason the book is aptly titled. Through out the book the reader is exposed to magical cultures from the Meso-American cultures (like the Incas and the Aztecs) to Jewish Folklore, to Hindu Vedas. This book covers global magical practices.

The author of this book did a lot of research into the different folk magic practices and traditions around the world in the creation of this book. The authors dedication to providing a diverse selection of folk magic and folk lore on each topic covered is clear by the wonderful footnotes and credits given throughout the book.

This book is not your basic how to book on witchcraft or magic. If you are looking for a how to write a spell or how magic works book than this book is not for you. This book is focused on and for those in the intermediate area of study. This book is designed to provide experienced practitioners new ways of practicing magic and looking at magical concepts from folk magic practices around the world.

A witches world of Magick is an informative guide to folk magic around the world. By the end of each chapter the reader has covered several different approaches to magical techniques in folk magic traditions that they may have never heard of or explored otherwise. Each chapter while they cover specific magical concepts and techniques covers the magical concepts and techniques from different perspectives in different cultures. In doing this the author provides many different views of magic and different ways to look at magic.

There are ten chapters in this book. Each chapter focuses on a specific type of magical concept or practice. With the common thread or practice for the chapter defined, the author in each chapter provides the reader with a ton of different sets of folklore and folk magic.

The book opens by mentioning how universal the concept of magic is and how wide the varieties of magical practices there are. With in the first chapter it is clear that the book does take a global approach to the practices and magical workings. While the title of the book is "A witches world of magic" not all of the traditions and practices that are discussed are considered witchcraft. The book really only touches on witchcraft at the end of each chapter, providing witches with questions to think about for their magical practices as well as concepts for how the folk magic discussions can be applied into an individuals witchcraft today.

To further illustrate that the book is not a book for beginners the first chapter in the book covers working magic with out the use of tools. The chapter is titled No-Tools Body magic. Its clear right away that the author is showing advanced magical techniques covering the practices of the evil eye, through speech and voice alone, to gestures and movement of the body to make magic effective.

The second chapter covers potion or mixing magic. Once again the author provides a few unusual ways of thinking about potion making and mixing ingredients to make a spell work. From gypsy love potions to a tale about two Polynesian wizards the author covers both conventional and unconventional forms of mixing magic and potions. Again the author ends the chapter with concepts for the practicing witch to ask themselves to further their new magical practices and concepts.

The third chapter discusses container magic. The chapter does not mention Jar spells as found in Hoodoo and other forms of magic but rather other types of containment spells. The concept of talismans and amulets as a container for magical energy is addressed her, but is addressed in a manner related to folk magic concepts. Once again various cultures from Egypt to Nigeria and even the PowWow tradition of the Pennsylvania Dutch magical practices related to containing forces and power are discussed in that chapter.

The fourth chapter is all about knot magic and binding magic. The spells covered here include a well known folk charm by sailors to create wind while at seas. Other knot magic and binding spells cover love and protection. From Gypsy magic to the sacred knots of the girdle worn by Zoroastrrians binding and knot based folk magic can be found in that chapter.

The fifth chapter is all about puncture magic. Yes the concept of voodoo dolls or dolls punctured to create a magical effect is covered here. However the dolls are only one of many different magical practices discussed here in this chapter. Not all piercing magic is baneful or curse like. The chapter covers a few examples of healing magic through punctures.

The sixth chapter is all about identification. In magic it is important to have a clear target or concept in mind when working a spell. If you are doing a distance healing for someone its important to know their name or have some way to connect the energetic forces to them. This chapter covers many different ways that a person can identify the target of their spell. From actual names to using body parts the folk magic in this chapter shows how identification of the target is essential.

The seventh chapter is actually related to the previous chapter. This chapter covers decoy magic. Here the magical practices include the well known witches jar, as well as using rocks or stones to distract a spirit. From using masks and loud noises to making an actual representation of the original target as a decoy, decoy and distraction magic is covered here.

The eighth chapter is about curse breaking. The author is clear in the beginning of the chapter that the two most common forms of magic practiced are those of healing magic and those of protection and curse breaking. The various mentioned include using parts of the body (hair, spit, etc) of the curser to remove the curse, destroying the artifacts, and sending back curses. From a modern American curse (the curse of the Bambino) to the Evil eye methods of curse breaking come in as many different forms as there are cultures in the world.

The ninth chapter is about masks and mimic magic. In shamanic cultures shape shifting is often involved in getting to know an animal spirit and to work with the animal spirit. This is just one form of mimic and mask magic involved. Other techniques include jumping high in the fields to show how the crops should grow. The idea is that by showing the fields how to grow they will and that by becoming the animal or spirit, that animal or spirit will manifest there and lend its power to the working at hand.

The final chapter discusses and mentions group magic and ritual. Group magic and ritual was common once but not so any more. From the ancient rituals of those who follow Dionysus to mentions of our modern day Pagan Pride day celebrations, the author covers why group magic is essential and why it should be considered a practice.

By the end of the book the author has given multiple cultural practices that a witch can integrate into their own practices and take inspiration from. The goal of this book is to inspire the witch to look at folklore and folk magic and find new ways of adding to their magical practices. This book is just what the intermediate witch needs to take their magic to the next level using only folklore and traditional practices.

While the book promises information from diverse cultures and provides that information, it's more of a kind of general purpose book. The writer assumes that you are an adept, experienced witch, and makes comments like, "So just take you enhancing herbs and swirl them around the mirror" or stuff like that. If you are a new, inexperienced witch or a self-studied person, this book is probably not very useful to you.

Here's a small excerpt of what I'm talking about: "At the center, make a single dot with your fingertip—this is the portal your ghost will enter. If you like, use a spirit-attracting herb or oil to trace the spiral and dot. Envision the spirit being inescapably drawn into the mirror. Invite it to enter with complimentary words acknowledging the ghost’s greatness—in other words, sweet talk it!" This is probably not something you'd say to a novice.

This book was made for winning

This is the first poker book that I have read all the way through. As much as I love poker, historically, I have not enjoyed reading about it. Most books about poker have these extended scenarios where the author gives a hypothetical example of the cards you have and the cards on the board and every possible version of what every other player might have. I find these stories incredibly boring and not helpful. They remind me of someone retelling a bad beat story at one table about something that happened at another table on another day at another casino. You had to be there for it to be interesting. Thankfully, this is not that type of book. Dr. Schoonmaker takes a different approach and writes about the way the game is played. He challenges the reader to take a hard look at themselves and their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to how they play poker. Even though I have been playing small limit games in Las Vegas as a tourist for over 10 years, I still found this book to be really helpful. I consider myself an action learner and most of what I know now about poker is what I've learned the hard way. It is only this year, though, that I have really focused on seat position as a strategy, thanks to Dr. Schoonmaker's advice. It has made a world of difference. I wish I would have read this book 10 years ago, I might have saved myself a lot of money. If you like to play small limit games, I think you would benefit from reading this book. It should pay for itself easily, the next time you play.

I have read most of the major books on limit holdem and have authored two of them myself as well as having written numerous columns for CardPlayer magazine covering Middle Limit Poker ($10-$20 and above). Due to the rise of no limit, most of the current action in limit poker is focused on small stakes holdem ($4-$8 and below) while the higher levels of limit holdem have almost died out. However, many of us still prefer limit poker and small stakes limit poker is very popular especially among those who are new to poker or just play for fun.

With the publication of this book, Dr. Al Schoonmaker has written one of the most important works ever on beating these small games. While there have been many books written about small games, they are all deeply flawed because they fail to address the impact of the rake, the jackpot drop, and other associated costs. Further, they make certain assumptions about how players react to bets and raises which turn out to be wrong. Finally, special rewards like high hand bonuses and other promotions that are funded by the jackpot drop can have a significant impact on how certain hands get played, which have never been addressed in previous books.

Al’s book does not present a formulaic approach to beating these games because there is no “formula.” He will not tell you what hands to play in what positions, when to bet or raise, and so forth. All this approach does is keep a novice from becoming a big loser. To become a winner, you need to understand things like pot-sizing, player types, seat selection, and a host of other factors beyond just starting hand values.

In closing, I know from having spent many hours playing with Al that he is among the most successful of all the small stakes players I have met. His book is a must read.

Terrific! A Must Read For The Typical Player!

“How to Beat Small Poker Games” is a terrific poker book!

Alan Schoonmaker, Ph.D. confronts the big questions: Can the recreational player overcome the overhead, rake, and promotion costs of a modern low-limit game in a card room? If that is possible, can a typical player lighten the weight of the obstacles which he carries with him through the door?

Following Alan's advice requires work and discipline. He explains why those are necessary. (Thank goodness, virtually no poker mathematics in this book.) Alan is aware that certain folks are happy where they are. Or are they?

He clearly states that achieving better results might not bring certain players more fun at the tables. As for me? I feel better when I do better. I am happy to apply his principles. Anything worth doing, is worth improving.

Alan Schoonmaker has extended his knowledge, rather like a handshake, to all the plumbers, waitresses, doctors, secretaries, young adults and seniors who sit, side by side, around the tables in card rooms spread across the land. We love the game. We want to book a few more wins at the cages -- just want to deal with the increasing high costs.

This book, to my knowledge, sets forth the cold, hard facts – present day realities, which I have never seen discussed in a book.

Most of us play cards to compete with others in an exciting game. Still, we want this to occur for a profit or reasonable price. At the same time, humans are “social beings.” I once asked Wasshim, our floorman, “What happens to the people who lose? Will the game dry up?”

Wass smiled, “Oh, they're still here. Some take a pauses to get another buy-in.” (This book will help keep the game going, despite higher costs. And all of us want to take fewer “pauses.”)

No, Dr. Schoonmaker is not my father! (I have never met or spoken with him.) He is known by his Good Works. You can wrestle the low limits to victory, if you follow his instructions.

Long answers less overwhelming on flash cards

When it comes to definitions, identifying and other long answers, it's a lot easier to read them and take them in in small parts. That's why these flash cards are so great. They go through the writing process, children's literature and so much more in chunks, breaking things down one card at a time. That information, even though some of it seems long, is easier to take in when it's ONLY one thing at a time. Line all of that into a big book and space it out between other things that you don't REALLY need to know and it's hugely overwhelming. These flash cards are surmountable because they are small and you can take them with you anywhere. You can sit and study them for hours at a time, or you can take them with you and get in a few cards here and there as you go about your day. Whatever way you choose to study, these flash cards can be a huge help.

The flash cards are a very good reference. You can pick and choose which flash cards to take with you, as it comes as a full sheet of heavy weight paper that has perforations that you rip to make flash cards if you choose to do so (each page has 6 flash cards on it). Additionally, I believe it contains a lot of information that never will be covered on the exam. I give it a 3 star rating.

I enjoyed reading this book which I found to be fascinating and enlightening. The book describes strategy and its role in ensuring that organisations achieve their mission. It is a comprehensive book on various aspects of strategy including the need to focus on customer needs, environmental analysis, knowledge management, strategy formulation, strategic positioning, strategy implementation, forecasting technologies, alliances, creative thinking, design as strategy, downstream business models, global leadership, among other informative topics.

The book is well written, well presented and easy to follow and understand. It is very practical and with many good examples and case studies. I would strongly recommend managers at all levels to read this interesting, practical and insightful book on strategy.
