About the Author
E. A. Preobrazhensky (1886-1937) was a leading Bolshevik, the most prominent Soviet economist of the 1920s, and co-author of The ABCs of Communism. A prominent early member of Leon Trotsky's Left Opposition in its early stages, Preobrazhensky was executed by Stalin in 1937.

Richard B. Day Ph. D. (1970), University of London, is Professor of Political Economy at the University of Toronto, Canada. He has published extensively on Soviet economic and political history, including Leon Trotsky and the Politics of Economic Isolation (Cambridge, 1973), and , with Daniel Gaido, Witnesses to Permanent Revolution (Haymarket 2011).

Mikhail M. Gorinov Ph.(D) History, First Deputy Head of the Main Archive Department of the City of Moscow, Russia. He is a specialist in Soviet History and has published on the political, economic and cultural life of Soviet society in the first half of the 20th century. Great little factoids here.

Read this book for some light reading. The quality of the paper is excellent, the pictures are well-chosen, and colorful as well. Tje author, Nancy Armstrong, presents a clear,unmuddled history of the nation's most popular Christmas tree.

Some interesting little facts that I challenge other readers to investigate: The origins of RCCT during the days of the depression (when things were really bad), Valerie Clarebout's design of the aluminum wire angels that have accompanied the tree, the "black light" that was used to light up the Center during WWII to save money and power, the fact that the trees are recycled into a variety of projects after the holidays, and interestingly enough, the RCCT doesn't need to be watered at all due to the high moisture in the air.

Colorful little book. Great history.

About the Author

Marilyn Booth holds the Iraq Chair in Arabic and Islamic Studies, University of Edinburgh. She has edited Harem Histories: Envisioning Places and Living Spaces (Duke UP, 2010), and a Journal of Women's History issue, Women's autobiography in the Middle East and South Asia (2013). She is Middle East/Europe editor of the Encyclopedia of Women and Islamic Cultures.

Anthony Gorman is Senior Lecturer in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Edinburgh. He has taught at universities in Australia, Egypt and Britain. Among his research interests are modern Egyptian historiography and the resident foreign presence in modern Egypt.

Can someone explain to me why this is out of print?

Unbelieveable. There is no doubting that James Joyce was one of the twentieth century's greatest writers. His contribution to modern literature is still being felt 60 years after his death. And, yet, his letters, which are as close as we will ever get to knowing what he was thinking while composing his great works, are no longer available in print?
Thank God I purchased this book years ago! Richard Ellmann had done a tremendous job of sorting and compiling Joyce's letters in a way that shows us Joyce's thinking as he put together "Dubliners", "Exiles", "Stephen Hero", "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man", "Ulysses", and "Finnegan's Wake". While some (back when the book first came out) questioned the extremely private/sexual communications that Ellmann included, no one doubted the importance of all the other selected letters. This is a remarkable look into the mind of a great writer, and I hope some publisher will pick it up and reprint it. In the meanwhile, try to get a used copy through Amazon.

Great book

I bought this book for a friend who loves Joyce. What is wonderful about this book is that it also has the R-rated letters that he wrote, so you get a more complete picture of Joyce the man and not just Joyce the author. Anyone who loves Joyce will love this book. I highly recommend it.

Quite unique and absolutely fascinating.

This book contains a suite of new letters to Joyce's wife Nora and another to his benefactress Harriet Weaver, which have been abridged or excluded from previous editions. The explicit nature of these love letters makes them unlike anything you have read before. This book delivers the full Joyce - unabridged and uncensored.

About the Author
Born in Indiana, Nancy Marchant first encountered brioche when she moved to the Netherlands in 1976. She has written articles about and designed knitwear featuring brioche stitch for Vogue Knitting and many other knitting magazines, and is also the author of the bestselling Knitting Brioche (North Light). She maintains a website at briocheknitting.com and teaches the technique at consumer and trade shows across the US as well as in an online class on craftsy.com called “Explorations in Brioche Knitting.” Nancy lives in Amsterdam.

Meet your new bestfriend, Nancy Marchant.

Years ago, I paid for a private lesson to learn how to knit basic two color brioche and walked away with empty pockets with no results. I took Nancy's brioche knitting class on Craftsy and made two scarves in a month. I loved it so much that I had to get this book to keep myself in practice. Brioche knitting is fun and addictive. The stitch patterns shown in this book are stunning and I found myself saying to my husband that Nancy Marchant is the Alice Starmore of Brioche knitting. He said, "That is high praise." He loves the book too and everyone has made requests already.. There is not one thing in this book that I do not want to do. The patterns and stitch designs are so nice. You can't help but be inspired. This one is a keeper!

Reversible, versatile brioche stitch

Brioche stitch is a form of slipped stitch knitting (you slip the stitch from the row beneath and make a slipped stitch-yarnover unit.) As with other slipped stitch fabrics, like mosaic knitting, it lends itself to two color work with ease and it's reversible. You can do circular knitting but because you need a right and a wrong side, you do a row 1 and a row 2 (like making garter stitch in circular knitting.) You can make swaths of intricate fabric that looks a bit like k1 p1 rib.

The fabrics created in "Fresh Brioche" are not like any I've seen before. In particular, there is a "cathedral" stitch I've never laid eyes on before. A lot of stitches look like waves, others like vines and leaves. The patterns created from the stitch variations are mostly shawls and cowls. Some of the patterns use light mohair, showing you that brioche stitch does not have to be made from smooth, heavier yarns, and that it can even create a lacy effect.

If you love to collect knitting stitch patterns, and if you love brioche stitch, this book has unusual and new ways to use brioche. It is somewhat limited in the pattern item selections, but this book is more a stitch book than a knitting pattern book. The stitches are eye-catching.

Brioche knitting for the noob or the master!

Yes, there are projects in this book. But it's so much more than that! Nancy not only gives you beautiful patterns to knit, she also gives you a fabulous foundation for brioche knitting that will allow you to completely understand the way that brioche fabric is made so that you can create your own brioche patterns. I love this book and would recommend it to anyone who wants to either learn basic brioche knitting or master it. As an added benefit, Nancy Marchant and Mercedes Tarasovich-Clark both teach Craftsy classes on brioche knitting. So if you buy this book (or any other brioche knitting tome) and find yourself baffled, head over and take a class on it! Start with Nancy's class if you knit English or Mercedes's class if you knit continental. I found that Nancy's brioche knitting is much more intricate and masterful, but that some people had a hard time understanding her techniques because she throws instead of picks. Good luck!
