About the Author
Aidan Dodson is a senior research fellow in the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology at the University of Bristol. In his primary field of study, he is the author of seventeen books and over 300 articles and reviews. He has also published a number of papers on naval matters and has worked on naval projects such as the Offshore Patrol Vessel HMS Clyde.

A Keeper BUT not Definitive

Seaforth Publishing has done it yet again. They have produced a lovely book filled with great photographs as well as some excellent information. The last 1/3rd of the book is devoted to ship plans and stats.
The much-published Aidan Dodson of the University of Bristol writes it. Dodson is best known for his work and his career in ancient Egyptian studies. Writing this book on the German battleships and large cruisers from 1871 to 1918 reminded me of the late professor Andrea Curami who worked in Italian military history, but his professional back ground was in bridge engineering. They were and are a credit to both.
The study does work in German secondary source material but is wedded in mostly in English language studies and the professor has clearly examined many sources. He does get the German desire for a high rate of fire for their warships (p45). He notes in the role of the weather patterns (p75) in the North Sea and Baltic which more often than not dictated short-range battle conditions.
One of the real strengths of this volume is you can pretty much know what squadrons ships belonged to at just about any point covered in this book, what their reconstructions turned them into, and often accompanied with a photograph showing the changes. So one will know the Deutschland (1 – 1875) seems to be an ill-fated warship. One tidbit is that before World War One the Moltke was almost dispatched to von Spee in the Far East. Additionally there is much on German built warships bought by other nations.
So what does the book not cover? 1) range of guns is neither complete nor perfectly accurate. Many German guns had their ranges extended in 1915 that Dodson misses (see Scheer’s book & p128 here). 2) You have German fleet organization but little on tactics and NOTHING on how the Germans used their battle squadrons as independent tactical units. (p105 & pp172-175). 3) Modern fire control is mentioned but there is really nothing about it here. 4) The advanced German use of water pumping, key when damaged for the survival of a warship is mentioned only in passing.
The professor gets a passing grade, but no “A”. It is a keeper, but is NOT definitive.

Disclaimer: I have a wargame coming out on JUTLAND at the end of the year that I have been researching for 4+ years. An essay on it just appeared in M.I.T.s ZONES OF CONTROL.

Great coverage in a relatively small work

Great coverage in a relatively small work! Although much may be familiar to an in depth enthusiast, there was still information that is new to me in English, rather than laboring through texts "auf deutsch". Photographic coverage is quite good,and many pix that are new to me, despite my 48 year interest in the High Seas Fleet. I highly recommend this work, and the excellent bibliography provides for those who wish to pursue more detailed information on particular classes or individual ships.

Thoroughly Enjoyable Reference

Just what I wanted... lots of details. This is a good companion for Robert K. Massie's book "Dreadnought"

The history included technological pollination events that I was unaware of (such as a USN Civil War Monitor getting into a "shoot off" with a German vessel). The ship lists are replete with major details. The section of line drawings (profile) was unexpected and welcome. Numerous deck plans and cut-away drawings and period photos go a long way to making these vessels "real" again.

The puppy-dog tails were wagging in Tailspin

I read this story in the anthology Hot In Here. I enjoyed it very much. The hero is a more "normal" man than some romance heroes. He is a lumberyard owner rather than a firefighter or EMT or military man. Those occupations automatically say "hero". However, the hero of this story is a normal man and his heroic tendencies are a bit subdued rather than flashy. He still wants to take care of those he loves; he does it without a uniform, though.
The heroine rescues abused animals and this story revolves around them being introduced by a pair of Chihuahuas and falling in love along with the dogs. Big, tough Buck has a very soft spot for the abused little Chihuahua rescued and being fostered by Sadie. The dog, Tish, loves to steal his boxers or a sock or some other item of clothing. She builds a nest under the furniture and watches from it. He understands why she flinches when he reaches for her, and he is as gentle with Tish as he is with Sadie. As you can imagine, though, with a Chihuahua running around the yard waving his boxers like a flag, the story has the laughs as well as the heat for which Foster is known by her fans.
The copyright is 2004, so it was written before I started grabbing each new Lori Foster book as it was released. I expected the story might be less polished and perhaps have a less interesting plotline than her newer works. I was mistaken. This is a very enjoyable story.

A Sweet Romance with a couple of dogs assisting

I read the story in a paperback years ago and wanted to add it to my Kindle. It's a sweet love story between a "stud" & a shy neighbor who has had a lonely life taking care of her sick mother. She works with injured dogs and they H & h meet when her dog is chasing her with a huge bug in her mouth. The two slowly become friends, lovers, and then more. A sweet, easy read romance.

This can be read as a standalone or it can be read as the 4th and last book of the Men of Courage series. Buck owns a lumberyard and puts in a lot of hours at work, because of this, he is in very good shape and due for a two week vacation. He gets signed up to watch his best friends dog, Butch the chihuahua while he and his wife go on a cruise. Sadie lives next to Buck and takes in abused animals to get them ready for a new home. She has taken care of her sick mother since she was a teenager and after she passes, Sadie is alone except for the animals she cares for. She's socially awkward and doesn't know what to do with Buck's invites to hang with him and his friends, so she refuses, coming across as cold and distant. Everything changes when she takes in Tish, a fat, bald chihuahua who brings her "gifts". After Buck rescues Sadie from one of Tish's "gifts", Buck uses Butch, who has fallen in love with Tish, as an excuse to spend time with the tender hearted Sadie. I laughed so many times during this book! Buck is the perfect type of man, he doesn't shy away from his love at first sight feelings he has for Sadie and he treats her and Tish with infinite care. Sadie has been isolated and sheltered and has no idea what to do with a man like Buck but it doesn't stop her from trying. So many good things about this book, it's hard to describe them all!

Lyn Paine is an experienced teacher trainer who has taught dance to all ages and has led training for the National Dance Teachers Association and AQA awarding body. Lyn has written several dance resources and also many dance programmes for BBC Education. She has directed schools’ dance performances at the Bournemouth International Centre and Royal Albert Hall. She also has worked on many other inspiring cross-arts and cross-cultural projects for children.

National Dance Teachers Association (NDTA) is the only association whose sole remit is dance in education. It is a registered charity and limited company by guarantee and is a membership organisation representing dance teachers in primary and secondary schools.

The NDTA seeks to ensure that all young people in the UK have equal access to a high-quality dance education. To achieve this, the association works with teachers, schools, government departments and arts and education agencies. They actively lobby for dance in the curriculum and assist in shaping policy relating to the quality, nature, range and scope of dance in the education sector.

NDTA is successful in raising the profile of dance at a national level through their website, their termly publication dancematters, their respected professional development programme and the development and dissemination of good practice.
