I could see Bruce Wayne obsessing over this book....

This isn't the type of book that I usually read- but I found it immensely interesting. It deals with night fighters throughout history, from the Moshuk Nanren (China), to the Hashishins (Islam), and Ulfhedrin (Norse.) There is a fair amount of philosophical and spiritual information included with the nuts and bolts of how to move unseen and neutralize defenses- and opponents.

I suppose that this book feeds my dark side, but it provides the kind of information that outsiders and underdogs (i.e. freedom fighters) need to strike back. Indeed, the Ninja (Shinobi) struck back at the injustices of the Samuri and their lords. The Ninja were considered to be descended from Tengu- half man/ half crow demons. They were said to be forest magicians with supernatural powers.

I could imagine Bruce Wayne obsessing over this book....

A good reference for this topic....

This is the first book I've read by this author but not the first book of this kind I've read. I found Knights of Darkness to be quite engaging. The historical aspects of the book are quite good without being annoying. The author provides a healthy dose of history without making it a history book. Likewise, he provides a great deal of practical (or should I say "tactical"?) information which I found to be useful to someone in those kinds of endeavors. Along with this information, he also gives historical proof of it's effectiveness.
I was especially impressed by the section on developing your senses, as this is not the first time I've read this type of information. Several other books I've read mention the necessity, and advantage, of developing your senses. I am personally taking this to heart. After all, having better developed senses should benefit in all areas of life.
Mention has been made of the simplicity of this book. In defense of the author, the majority of people write on a third-grade level and read on a level not much higher. In an effort to reach the majority of readers, an author shouldn't write on a level challenging to college students. "Write simple, write for the masses."
I was also impressed with the author's inclusion of criminal organizations. Many authors would find including criminals as a "good example" to be distasteful. However, criminal organizations often use methods to achieve their goals which are wholly applicable to the topic of the book. As the author states, "If a tactic, technique, or training method works, use it, no matter what its origins. In other words, whatever gets you through the night."
In conclusion, I found this to be a very interesting and informative book. I would recommend it to anyone seeking information in this field.

About the Author

Diana Burton is Professor of Education and Director of the Centre for Developmental and Applied Research in Education at the University of Wolverhampton. She was formerly Pro Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Education at Liverpool John Moores University, where she was previously Dean of Education. She worked for many years at Manchester Metropolitan University leading teacher education programmes and was a secondary school teacher before that.

Diana has a Masters and PhD in the field of Educational Psychology. She is the author of a number of books and articles on pupil learning, teacher development, educating children with behavioural, emotional and social disadvantage, citizenship and social justice. She is a fellow of the Royal Academy for the Society of the Arts, and the Higher Education Academy and an active member of the British Education Research Association.

Steve’s research interests are in practitioner research where he has worked with networks of teachers on the development of their classroom evaluations. He has also been involved with the development of Education Studies as a subject in HE. Steve has been chair of the British Education Studies Association and was more recently involved in the review of the Education Studies Subject Benchmarks for QAA.

Steve currently teaches research methods on the master’s in leadership and management and education studies on the combined awards program.

Best for ANY occasion

This book is one of my all time favorites, which is very surprising if you have every seen the size. I was in a book store with family rushing to leave and something stopped me. I picked up this book and then I put it down because I needed to leave with my family. I don't exactly know why I picked it back up to buy it, but it was the best book I ever purchased. Worth reading for an otolaryngology resident

Audiology is a subject on which I previously only learned the basics and never had a good chance to learn more about. I chose this title to help me learn more about audio and kids with hearing loss and I like the format of the cases and the content is appropriately balanced so that I am learning important points without reading a book that is organized in only bullet point format.
