Two lumberjacks, Thomas and Sarentha, flee everything they know when Thomas murders a co-worker. In the dead of night, a cloaked noble approaches and offers them a sum of coins they cannot refuse. His sole request is for the pair to retrieve an amethyst from a tomb. From there, they are introduced to Eliza, a spirited and head-strong noblewoman who proves her competence with her skills in diplomacy and combat. Together with Thomas’ strength and steadfastness, and Sarentha’s drive and inquisitiveness, the trio makes an odd but capable group. Their adventures take them across the lands of the Tamorran Empire to witness sights they never imagined. With grand plans in motion, everything hinges on Thomas, Sarentha, and Eliza’s success. Artefacts need to be crafted, alliances need to be formed, and above all, secrets need to be kept. Not even their own allies know every facet of the noble’s quest, and he plays a dangerous game by creating plots within plots. Can the disparate trio hold together throughout their trials? What secret does the noble know that causes him to go to such extraordinary lengths to succeed? Dark shadows blanket the Tamorran Empire, and illuminating those secrets will bring a terrifying truth.

About the Author
Born in Ontario in 1979, Ryan Toxopeus still resides there with his wife, daughter, and son. He obtained a Master’s in Applied Health Research at Lakehead University before moving to southern Ontario to find employment as a research associate and lab technician. Ryan enjoys soccer, baseball, playing all forms of games, and spending time with his family. Ryan has loved writing since he was old enough to know how, and though he leaned more toward math and science at times, he kept returning to writing. In high school the fantasy novels of R. A. Salvatore inspired him to write a gigantic science fantasy story called Wrath, which will never see the light of day. In university a friend encouraged him to enter a creative writing contest, where his fictional story of a World War II resistance fighter being captured and escaping a concentration camp won him first place. After that, Ryan stopped writing for many years, until another friend encouraged him to write about a long-running game session from years ago. A year later, A Noble’s Quest hit e-book stores as a self-published title, and Ryan has been writing steadily ever since he received his first amazing reviews. Ryan focuses on fast-paced plots with the mantra, “If I’m bored writing it, the readers will be bored reading it!”

Throughout it all the Lord promises a great truth will be revealed once everything is prepared
By Amazon Customer
The first book in a trilogy, the story initially explores how a trio of adventurers come together and why. As they embark on several quests for the Lord who is their benefactor, we get a lot of backstory and what larger purpose these quests have. Throughout it all the Lord promises a great truth will be revealed once everything is prepared. It is at the climax of the book that the truth is indeed revealed and it is worth all of the build up. perhaps being even a grander revelation than could have been anticipated.

It is a fantasy story rich with plenty of characterization, memorable characters, fighting, magic, and various fantasy races such as goblins, elves, and dwarves. At it's heart though it is about legacies and standing up for what you believe in.

A fun fantasy tale with questionably heroic main characters
By Andy Goldman
If you’ve ever played Dungeons and Dragons, chances are you and your group of fellow adventurers sometimes waded into combat without asking a lot of questions first. Or justified a slaughter when diplomacy fell through. Or found it easier to kill the King’s guards and hide the bodies than face up to some perhaps well-deserved justice.

You did all this in the name of fun and because, as the main characters in your own story, you were obviously the heroes. You saved the world, or at least the town, and if you left a lot of bodies behind along the way, well, that’s the life of an adventurer.

Maybe someone in your group jokingly brought up how your actions must appear to everyone else in the game world. “We’re murder hobos!” But it’s just a game and everyone’s having fun, so who cares, right?

But when those adventures are the basis for a book, as they are here, those ruthless antics are not as simple. As a reader, I expect the main characters to act heroic, work toward becoming a hero, or at least recognize that they’re not heroes at all, but they’re doing what they think is right.

If I had one huge disconnect with the book, it is that while the main characters are proclaimed to be heroic, the book never really addresses that they often act like murderers and thieves, without having any sense that their actions are justified. They’re doing it because they’ve been sent on a series of quests to achieve a secret goal, and they repeatedly talk about these quests in a way that seemed a little too meta for the characters, as if they were aware they were an adventuring party in a game.

One of the main characters repeatedly worries about the group’s seemingly unjustified murders, but eventually has an epiphany in which he realizes they were all justified after all because he was defending himself and his friends. I didn’t buy the logic and I never really felt the characters were heroic.

That being said, the book is well-written and it kept me reading. There’s a good sense of humor throughout and, even though a lot of the world-building is stock Player’s Handbook in many parts, the original touches are clever and engaging. I especially enjoyed a scene of some dwarves dealing with an interesting type of alarm, and any scene that had to do with the Dwarven religion, which seems like a clever, Dwarven take on Christianity.

I think if you approach this book as the account of a role-playing group acting out the lives of Player Characters, you’ll be more likely to enjoy it for what it is. And when all is said and done, I want to know what happens next in this world. Good thing then that the second book, A Wizard’s Gambit, is in the works.

Fun Fantasy Tale in the Table-Top Tradition!
By Trekelny
Here's a book that really embraces its role-playing heritage, and I did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did. Here are classic races, big-time conflict, and a world with deep history stretching over centuries of time. Yet through it all, there's a strong "D&D" feel to the tale, complete with traps, encounters, maybe even saving throws! It might come off superficial to "grown-ups" but for YA to adult audiences this is a fun story that really rolls along. I was amazed how easy it was to read on, pick up the thread and just go with the heroes all the way.

Beautifully put-together. I'm only about halfway through, but it's a fascinating way to read about E St V M's life. Great insights as to who she was and how she wrote. I'd recommend following along by reading the poems and stories she mentions in the letters.

From Publishers Weekly
In this fresh, contemporary collection of recipes, London chef Kochhar (Indian Essence) laments the lack of seafood in Indian cookery, which tends to fixate on heavy curries. He sets out to right this problem. This being a fish-only book, chapters include Soups and Stews, Starters, Salads, Fish for Everyday, and special-occasion fish dishes. Traditional Indian fare is the starting point, like mulligatawny soup, updated with a sprinkling of crabmeat; samosas, stuffed with spiced crayfish fish marinated in masala and served with paratha bread. English influences sneak in, too, by way of Bubble and Squeak with leftover fish, and fish kebab and chips on a roll. Other dishes, like Mumbai fish pizza and swordfish stroganoff showcase Kochhar's profound creativity and sense of humor. While the book's scope is narrow, this volume more than fulfills its stated goal. Even better, its recipes are simple enough to make this powerfully flavorful food accessible at home. (Dec.)

Superb collection of seafood recipes, with tantalizing pictures
By Atul V
Don't normally post reviews of cookbooks and found myself really liking this one; It contains a wide variety of recipes, from sweet and mild through hot and smoking. Another innovation is that the author has invited (and included) contributions from other chef's which, by spanning across many regions of India, makes this collection that much more inclusive.

#2 Making a Killing
#3 Joint Enterprise
#4 A Dog’s Life
#5 Particular Stupidities
#6 Unhappy Families
#7 A White-Knuckle Christmas (In production.)

An entertaining read but with no "aha" and a few "particular stupidities".
By Charmed Cookie
This is the fifth in Oliver Tidy's Romney and Marsh police procedural series, and it's an entertaining, but not spectacular, read. I've read all but the first book in the series, and each held my interest until the end, but without that satisfying "aha" moment that I get at the conclusion of a really great mystery. Particular Stupidities is no exception: the story is amusingly revealed but without building a foundation of facts with which the reader could, if clever enough, reasonably deduce the solution. I much prefer to be engaged in actually in solving the mystery as I'm reading, following all the clues and figuring out which are red herrings and which are truly relevant. Unfortunately, few current authors follow this model - where are all the new Agatha Christies and Arthur Conan Doyles? Without giving away the entire plot, I can say that in Particular Stupidities the identity of the perpetrator pretty much comes out of left field with little, if any, development of the character or interesting motivation for the crime. That said, I'm still giving this 4 stars because the story was mildly humorous, and the series' characters continue to be developed, although Romney continues to be beset with "particular stupidities" when reaching his final conclusions, as he has been in the previous books in the series.

Unfortunately, I found a couple "particular stupidities" perpetrated by the author to be very annoying. In one story thread, a member of the CID unit has a temporary mouth problem leaving him with a speech impediment. This was kind of funny at first, but the author carried on the joke waaay too long. During fully half of the book, this detective's dialogue - and there was a fair amount of it - was written in the author's conception of phonetic spelling. A typical example: "shcwap bushinesh chwishe". Multiply that a hundredfold and you will get some idea of how this could break the flow of the storyline. I found it tiresome to be continually trying to figure out what the heck the detective was saying, and in each bit of dialogue there were always several words that were frankly indecipherable. I got the gist of what he was trying to say, but perhaps missed that all-important clue that would have allowed me to figure out the murderer, ha ha! In another story thread, unimportant to the actual plot, the author coyly tries to mislead the reader with allusions to a mysterious female in Romney's life. While the identity of the mystery girl is revealed at the end, I thought from the beginning that it was obvious the author was dropping hints that I was meant to misinterpret. Although the existence of this person was somewhat illuminating in regards to Romney's character development, the obvious attempts to manipulate the reader were clumsy and distracting.

Despite these few flaws, I'm recommending this book because it absorbed and entertained me, and I will no doubt read the next book in the series. I probably have graded this a bit too easily with 4 stars, but am giving a little extra credit because this is a self-published ebook and I think this genre, without professional editors and proofreaders, should be cut a little slack.

Everything is not pretty - you see the strengths and weaknesses of many ...
By Connield
Romney and Marsh have returned and the result is not disappointing. #5 in the series of their adventures and misadventures can be read as a stand alone mystery, but having read the first four, their continued character development is apparent. It is a British police procedural presented with a mixture of humor and drama. A feeling for the guilty party comes fairly early but with many side tracks en route to the ending. Romney continues to be a bit of curmudgeon, bright in his reasoning but with common foibles which continue to cause him difficulties. Marsh, his Detective Sergeant partner, grows in character and personality here and it is welcome to see her come into her own in the department.

Oliver Tidy's writing continues to present a well written book with very few editorial slips. He describes the Dover area, the police station and other locales, and the characters with detail and depth. The reader is able to get into the story quickly and escape into the activities of the main players. Everything is not pretty - you see the strengths and weaknesses of many of the players. It is agreed that the extended vocalizing of the detective with dental work became a bit tedious, but that is the only real complaint. All in all, a delightful read, a return visit with some old acquaintances, and a highly recommended book.

This writer is a bit befuddled as to why there are not more readers of the offerings of Oliver Tidy - consistently well done and enjoyable.

More than enough "particular stupidities" to go around and Romney has a goodly share.
By Robert C. Rettke
In this fifth Romney and Marsh police procedural the author continues to show us two main characters and their situations, warts and all, pluses and minuses. These are not super cops. There are even welcome hints to the three-dimensionality of some of the supporting and minor characters. The mystery is solved by a combination of good police work and chance discoveries. For me, the main story was that D I Romney's minuses seemed to be overwhelming his pluses and an officer and a man. Without giving away too much, I'll just say that bad decisions based on his particular stupidities caused bad things to happen to three other people who had done nothing to deserve them and could have ended his own and perhaps other careers. Fortunately, there is some effective and much appreciated humor to balance the inevitable gloominess of realistic description of crime and people affected by it. As a retired teacher (and teacher of teachers), I enjoyed the descriptions of the riotous behavior of young children at change of classes and recess -- I've seen things very like those described. I also enjoyed Romney's neat twist on the multiple intelligences theory of Harvard's Howard Gardner which I still have in my library. I'm already looking forward to the next book, although Dover is credited with many more homicides than actually occur. The whole UK has a homicide total less than that of a medium-sized American city.

The Judge's House: Inspector Maigret, Book 22, by Georges Simenon

Exiled from Paris, Maigret discovers some disturbing secrets in a sleepy coastal town in this new translation.

A short, sprightly man appeared in the doorway, looked left and right, and went back into the passage. A moment later, the improbable happened. The little man reappeared, bent over, clinging to a long mass that he now started dragging through the mud. It must have been heavy. After four metres, he stopped to catch his breath. The front door of the house had been left open. The sea was still 20 or 30 metres away.

This novel has been published in a previous translation as Maigret in Exile.

Georges Simenon was born in Liège, Belgium, in 1903. Best known in Britain as the author of the Maigret books, his prolific output of over 400 novels and short stories have made him a household name in continental Europe. He died in 1989 in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he had lived for the latter part of his life.

A Maigret interrogation -- otherwise known as "The Singing Session"
By R. M. Peterson
Penguin UK is in the midst of issuing new translations of all seventy-five of Georges Simenon's Maigret novels, one per month. THE JUDGE'S HOUSE was originally published in 1942; in its earlier English translation it was titled "Maigret in Exile". Reading it was sufficiently entertaining and sufficiently literary that I probably will indulge myself with a few others from the new Penguin series.

Detective Chief Inspector Jules Maigret has been exiled from the Police Judiciaire in Paris for unexplained reasons. He now toils in Luçon, in the Vendée. A curious old woman visits him to report that for two days there has been a body on the floor of an upstairs room of a judge's house in L'Aiguillon, a small village on the coast. Maigret accompanies the woman to L'Aiguillon and arrives in time to find the judge, in the middle of the night, dragging a corpse wrapped in a couple of sacks towards the ocean. The judge turns out to be very polite and extraordinarily unflappable, offering Maigret armagnac while he calmly explains matters in his library in front of a crackling blaze in the fireplace. That's the beginning to a rather peculiar tale of not one but two murders; a pair of headstrong young men who make their livings in the mussel fields; two mentally unbalanced, nymphomaniac women, mother and daughter; and a remote coastal community. It culminates with an unorthodox and riveting interrogation by Maigret.

Decades ago I read a fair amount of "detective fiction", but for some time now the genre hasn't held much interest for me. About a year ago I read my first Maigret novel by Simenon; it was engaging enough that I tried THE JUDGE'S HOUSE and, as mentioned, I suspect I will return for more. What's different about Simenon and Maigret? I don't yet have a satisfactory answer. Part of it surely has to do with the straightforward character of Maigret, who is stolid and rather ordinary, without the machismo of most leading men of the genre. Another part of the attraction has to do with the way Simenon tells his stories, with an accelerated pace but little of the tough, cynical prose of American noir fiction.

I do know that I have good company in admiring Simenon. The first page of this volume contains eleven blurbs from literary types -- among them William Faulkner ("I love reading Simenon. He makes me think of Chekhov."); André Gide ("The greatest of all, the most genuine novelist we have had in literature."); and Anita Brookner ("The mysteries of the human personality are revealed in all their disconcerting complexity."). In addition, I remember from a biography of T.S. Eliot that he too was an avid reader of Simenon.

* * * * *

I don't know whether the initial fault was Simenon's or the translator's (Howard Curtis), but there are two inconsistencies that Penguin should not have allowed to go into print. On the very same page (page 6), the old woman who sets the tale in motion tells Maigret that (a) she has a house in L'Aiguillon "near the harbour", and (b) that "the village of L'Aiguillon is quite far from the harbour". She also tells him that "only about twenty" people live in L'Aiguillon, but as the novel proceeds it is clear that at least ten times that number must live there, as there are two hotels, twenty or thirty working mussel boats, and dozens of schoolchildren.

You would not want this nosy pair for neighbors!
By Patto
Old Didine and her retired husband spend hours spying on their neighbor the judge. Finally it pays off! They spot a dead man on the floor of the judge's house. Didine rushes off to fetch Inspector Maigret.

Maigret has been exiled to this dull coastal town full of mussel farmers due to some unnamed infraction. He's dying of boredom, and a murder case comes as a veritable gift from heaven. Maigret hastens to Didine's house, and sure enough, next door the judge is dragging a man's body down to the water...

There are many delicious moments in this little novel: Maigret's guilty enjoyment of the judge's cozy sitting room and fine brandy, although the judge may be a murderer; old Didine's spiteful spouting of scandal about her neighbor; Maigret's loathing of his vulgar assistant who stinks of brilliantine...

A high point of the plot is Maigret's interrogation of two young mussel farmers. No one knows where he's going with his questions. One minute he's kind and sympathetic, the next minute he's putting on a fit of fury while angrily guzzling wine. This is the bear-like Maigret at his trickiest and most unpredictable.

I love Simenon's style, his ability to convey atmosphere in a few terse sentences, his internal dialog that breaks off so suggestively. The Judge's House (first published in 1942) is a little gem, rich in quirky characters and subtle humor.

another great Simenon mystery
By Miss Ivonne
An observant old lady alerts Detective Chief Inspector Maigret to some strange goings-on at her neighbor’s house in the 1942 novel The Judge’s House (also published as Maigret in Exile). And what Didine Hulot has seen at Judge Forlacroix’s house in L’Aiguillion is a dead body. She ensures that Maigret is on the scene when the retired judge tries to dispose of the corpse. And that’s just the beginning of this suspenseful novel, full of twists and turns. One of the best of Georges Simenon’s wonderful novels. And if you get to listen to the book narrated by Gareth Armstrong, so much the better.
