About the Author
J.Susan Milton is professor Emeritus of Satatics at Radford University. Dr. Milton recieved the B.S. degree from Western Carolina University, the M.A. degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the Ph.D degree in Statistics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State university. She is a Danforth Associate and is a recipient of the Radford University Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching. Dr. Milton is the author of Statistical Methods in the Biological and Health Sciences as well as Introduction to statistics, Probability with the Essential Analysis, and a first Course in the Theory of Linear Statistical Models. Jesse C. arnold is a Professor of Statistics at Virginia Polytechnic Insitute and state University. Dr. arnold received the B.S. Degree from Southeastern state University, and the M.A and Ph. D degrees in statistics from Florida state university. He served as head of Statistics department for ten years, is a fellow of the American Statistical Association, and elected member of the International Statistics Institute. Ha has served as President of the International Biometric Society (Eastern North American Region) and Chairman of the statistical Educational Section of the American Statistical Association.

awfull

i bought this thinking it would show the solutions worked out in an easy to follow step by step fashion,but it doesn't. Instead it just shows the final answer for the questions just like the back of the text book. saying the answer is "23.8" doesn't help students at all if they don't understand the process to get "23.8"

you should instead put your money towards a tutor because they would be far more helpful than this book

Helpful for understanding homework

This manual only shows solutions to the odd problems (-1 star for that). That's not a big problem since instructors assign mostly odd problems that have answers in the back of the textbook. For a few of the problems that simply ask students to look up a value in the chi squared or normal distribution tables, the manual does just show the final answer just like the back of the textbook. I don't fault the manual for that because a manual cannot show the process for answering a simple table problem. However, for most problems, this manual DOES show the solutions worked out in an easy to follow, step by step fashion. For most problems, the manual explains the process way better than the back of the textbook does.

I hate paying extra for the answers, but if you are busy and good at teaching yourself these manuals are immensely powerful tools. If you are struggling and can afford the extra, these are a great way to catch up.

Takes Functional Lab Testing to a New Level

I'm absolutely in love with this book, it takes a deeper look at implication of lab tests and the metabolic imbalances that can be found within "normal" lab values. It goes further to explain additional topics such as detoxification pathways, lipid metabolism, and what I like to refer to as metabolism "misadventures". The fact I was able to find a used copy in excellent condition at a fraction of the retail price was all the more satisfying.

You better know your biochem really well to get thru this book, but once you've got the foundation, it's only the logical next step to lab evals. Highly recommended, as western labs miss so much!

Laugh out loud

I have realized lately that life is not as full of 'laugh out loud' moments as it should be. Reading BANK is an exception. I laughed out loud numerous times. BANK is witty, funny and insightful. I have never worked in a bank and I sure wouldn't want to now. In addition to many laughs BANK also made me think about what I do for a career and why it is important to me. Any book that makes me laugh and think deserves full five stars. I'll be buying this book as a gift for many people I know and I encourage everyone to do the same (after reading it themselves of course)! I also think this would be a great book for a reading club and will recommend it to the group I participate in.

Fairly accurate, unfortunately.

This was a fast read that gives a pretty realisitc look at what it was like being an M&A investment banking analyst. The awful hours, alternating late nights between, say, the complex financial modeling that could determine whether or not two companies with thousands of employees merge or not (and have layoffs or not), based on the vast experience of a 22 year old college econ major who prays to god that someone will and will not look over his work for different reasons, and the next night, bribing the guy in the copy room with a free pizza to get your pitch books to the front of the line since you need 15 copies by morning, and you just had to re-do the original since the margin crept up on the footnote no one will read in the 4th page of Appendix C. I think the author is at his best though, when he captures fairly well the 'how did I get here; why was I on this bandwagon' sentiment that creeps in about 1 year in, just when you're starting to get good at what you're doing, but also counting down to the end of the 2nd year when you're done. And yes, everyone wanted to get a gig in private equity. And yes, personal life suffers immensely, which kind of sucks since you're living in Manhattan in the prime of your life making mad money, but having little outlet to enjoy it. All in all, and I certainly could go on, its the most accurate read I've read yet of the IBK experience. Of course, i-bankers love to read about themselves, and they'll love the book. Whether or not anyone else would or should care, is hard to say. But its a fast read, so have at it. I have to go get a drink as I've now dredged up too many memories of this job I thankfully moved on from.

truth or fiction?

Anyone who works for an investment bank has heard the analyst horror stories. Why anyone would sacrifice the majority of their prime years to go work "white-collar slavery" hours, is beyond the ability of most people to rationalize. "Bank" gives you a bit more perspective into what is going through the minds of these 20-somethings as they work relentless 110+ hour weeks, sacrifice every relationship, and absorb ridiculous amounts of abuse from their superiors. Oh -- and then there's the money. The money is good, but its interesting to note how the characters in Bank aren't as preoccupied with money as they are with simply getting through the week alive.

Bank has a cast of characters whose traits are obviously exaggerated, but to a very amusing effect. We have Postal Boy, Clyde, The Defeated One and Mumbles (the narrator). Postal Boy is expected to explode and "go postal" at any moment. He has a facial twitch which he claims is caused by working at the bank. The Defeated One is defeated in spirit, yet most of the plotting pranks and planning revenge on coworkers seems to originate from him. He also has a trophy girlfriend who drains his bank account, and a coke habit. Mumbles, the narrator, deals with the day-to-day stresses by focusing on the finish-line: 2 years. He just wants to make it 2-years as an investment banking analyst. After his stint is over, he pictures himself doing almost anything but what he's doing now.

Admidst the jokes and hilarious narrative, the author drives home his educated view that the investment banking trade is a largely vapid existence, devoid of fairness, intellectual stimulation (he's basically a spreadsheet jockey) or any semblence of a balanced lifestyle. While many might agree, there are still droves of freshly minted MBA's applying for bulge-bracket firms Analyst/Associate programs every year, so nothing is going to change anytime soon.

Wonderful fantastic story!

these books just get better and better. They can stand alone or you can just start with book 1 and just keep going! They weave a very exciting adventure, warming your heart in the tender romance. So well written and enjoyable to sit back and curl up with. Lacy is a very talented author.
This is a sweet clean romance a feel good happy ever after story, just like the fairy tale. You will not be disappointed I promise! :)

There had to be some mistake.

As he pulled out of the sheriff's station parking lot, Chase Reed requested the dispatcher repeat the address one more time.

1101 Oakwood Lane.

No mistake, and no time to waste.

Chase flipped on his emergency lights and siren as he sped through downtown, concerned over what he might be facing when he arrived at his destination on the outskirts of Placid—the recently-divorced Jessica Keller Wainwright's home. He only knew that a domestic dispute call had been placed by a hysterical woman and an ambulance had been dispatched. He didn't know who had been injured or how. One thing was certain. If Dal-ton Wainwright had laid a finger on Jess, he'd kill him.

In the six months since he'd returned to Placid, he'd only spoken to Jess once by phone, a tense conversation that involved generalities—her new job teaching second grade, his new job as deputy sheriff and briefly about her divorce, like they were only acquaintances. Even though they'd corresponded through the years, they'd never talked about the night before he left for his first tour of duty.

He hated that he'd obviously hurt her with his careless behavior. Hated that she'd run off and married Wain-wright two weeks later. Hated that he'd somehow driven her to that decision and in turn, set a course that had ultimately led to this moment.

Chase's mind continued to reel with the possibilities as he whipped into the lengthy drive leading to the massive redbrick mansion. He barely had the car stopped before he slid out of the driver's side and his feet hit the pavement. A gust of unseasonably cold, bitter wind sent a spiral of leaves across the stone walkway as he strode past the for sale sign toward the planked porch. The white holiday lights hanging from the eaves and the huge artificial Christmas tree filling the entry window gave the appearance of normalcy. But when he found the front door partially ajar, he prepared for anything but a normal situation.

Chase poised his hand on the Glock holstered at his hip as he moved into the foyer, an automatic reaction resulting from hour upon hour of military training. But in this instance, he wasn't the soldier navigating war-torn territory. He was the deputy sheriff doing his duty no matter what he might encounter. senses on high alert, he cocked his head to listen as he walked past the ornate staircase and down the tiled corridor. The sound of harsh sobs caused him to quicken his pace, his heart keeping an equally rapid tempo. The minute he entered the great room, he pulled up short to survey the scene.

To his left, Jess sat on the floor, her back to a white leather sofa, hugging her knees to her chest as she rocked back and forth like a lost child. Chase instinctively started toward her until something caught his immediate attention from the corner of his eye. He turned to see a figure crumpled near the stone hearth—only to discover it was Dalton Wainwright.

When he noticed the blood pooling around Dalton's head, images of war zipped through Chase's brain. Fallen comrades, chaos and confusion. Death and destruction. A fatal error he'd made that couldn't be rectified…

Chase again forced the memories away as he walked to his long-time nemesis, crouched down, pressed his fingertips against Dalton's neck and fortunately for Jess, found a pulse.

"He's dead, isn't he?" she asked in a tone strangely absent of emotion.

"He's alive but unconscious," he assured her, although right then he wasn't sure of anything.

When he heard the wail of sirens, Chase immediately went to Jess, knelt and took her by the shoulders. "Are you okay?" he asked, even though he could tell she wasn't from the undeniable shock in her eyes.

"It was an accident," she muttered as her gaze slid away. "No one's fault."

Chase couldn't imagine Jess would intentionally injure her ex-husband, but he wasn't fool enough to deny anything was possible when it came to volatile relationships. "Look at me, Jess." Once he finally had her attention, he added, "When the paramedics get here, don't say anything about what happened."

"But I didn't mean—"

"Don't talk about it," he cautioned again. "You have to remember who you're dealing with here, even if it was an accident."

Realization dawned in her expression. "Edwin," she said in a whisper.

"Yeah. Your ex-father-in-law could make this tough on you. And anything you tell me could be used against you in court if it comes to that."

Her eyes went wide with terror. "Court?"

Before Chase had a chance to reassure her, the sound of gurney wheels echoing through the foyer interrupted his train of thought. He straightened and met the EMTs as soon as they entered the room. "He's still alive," he told a fifty-something paramedic named Joe. "But it looks like he has a pretty serious head injury."

"We'll take it from here," Joe said before he and his partner went to work on Dalton.

Chase helped Jess to her feet and guided her down the hall to the formal dining room he found nearby. After he had her seated in a chair at the polished mahogany table, he asked, "Where's your son?"

"Upstairs."

Chase wondered exactly what the boy had witnessed during the last few minutes. "I want you to stay right here while I go check on him."

She nodded like she needed complete guidance. Chase understood that all too well.

He strode back into the great room in time to find the crew loading Dalton onto the stretcher, but he didn't stop to check on his status. Instead, he took the stairs two at a time. When he reached the top landing, he discovered Danny Wainwright, dressed in a pair of race-car pajamas, standing against the wall with his gaze focused on the hardwood floor.

After Danny finally looked up, Chase was amazed over how much he resembled Jess, with the exception of his blond hair. Fortunately he couldn't see a scrap of Dalton in him, but he did see the same vacant stare his mother had exhibited a few moments ago.

More recollections of another time, another foreign place and another child intruded into Chase's thoughts. He had to get a grip on the present and stay out of the past for both Jess and her son's sake.

Chase swept his cowboy hat from his head and kept a safe distance. "Hey, Danny. I'm Deputy Reed, a friend of your mom's."

The boy blinked but remained silent.

He decided tackling Danny's immediate worry might help. "The paramedics are taking your dad to the hospital, so he's in good hands."

Still no response, and Chase wasn't real sure how to proceed. "Do you want to go see your mom?"

This time Danny shook his head, which fueled Chase's concerns. If the kid had witnessed Jess injuring Dalton, inadvertent or not, he could have a damn hard time forgiving his mother. He wasn't too keen on leaving the boy alone, but he didn't want to push him, either. "Why don't you wait in your room and I'll have your mother come up to talk to you."

Without any reply or hesitation, the boy headed down the hall and walked through a door to his right. Chase followed behind and entered a bedroom decked out in dark blue walls and baseball memorabilia. A typical kid's room that reminded him of his own when he'd been about Danny's age, only he'd been more inclined to collect football souvenirs.

When Danny curled up on the bed facing the wall, Chase felt the need to say something else, to offer some words of comfort, but he had no real experience dealing with childhood trauma. "I'll be back in a few minutes with your mom, okay?"

Danny didn't respond, didn't even shrug his shoulders to acknowledge the suggestion. With any luck, reuniting him with Jess would be the key to his comfort. Then again, maybe not, but Chase felt he had no choice in the matter.

As he sprinted back down the stairs, Chase heard the sound of an all-too-familiar voice coming from somewhere in the house. A booming voice that belonged to his father, the sheriff. No surprise that Buck would have been summoned, considering the nature of the crime. Correction. Accident. Chase refused to believe anything else until proof landed in front of his nose. Even then he'd have a hard time buying Jess flying into a homicidal rage.

He made his way back to the dining room where he'd left Jess and arrived just in time to hear his dad say, "You're going to have to give me more details than that."

Furious over Buck's tone, Chase stepped inside the opening, hands fisted at his sides. "Can I have a word with you?"

Buck turned to him and scowled. "I'm taking Jess's statement, son, so you'll need to wait a minute."

Chase was tempted to remind his father that he should call him by his proper name, not son. "It's important."

Buck forked his fingers through his silver hair and sighed. "Fine," he said before turning to Jess. "Don't go anywhere."

As soon as Buck joined him at the front door out of Jess's earshot, Chase turned his fury on his father. "What in the hell are you doing?"

"My job, exactly what you should be doing, too. She told me you hadn't questioned her about Dalton's injuries."

"She said it was an accident and that's all I needed to know."

Buck hooked his thumbs in his pockets and stared him down like he was thirteen, not thirty-one. "Doesn't matter what she said, boy. You have to get all the facts to put into the report."

Chase pointed in the direction of the dining room. "That's Jess in there, Dad. The same girl who used to come with her folks to our house for Sunday dinner and dominoes."

"Yeah, and you're too close to the situation. That's why I called in Barkley to assist me. He should be here in about five minut...

pure Gold police procedural romance

Ten years ago in Placid, Mississippi Chase Reed and Jess Keller shared a one night stand just before he shipped out to Afghanistan. As he deployed, she and her high school sweetheart Dalton Wainwright marry.

A decade later, Chase is out of the military and working as the local sheriff. Jess divorced Dalton and raises their son Danny by herself. Though home for several months, his first encounter in person with Jess is breaking up a domestic dispute. However, he finds Danny lying unconscious with a fractured skull. He warns Jess that she will have trouble with her ex-father-in-law and if she says anything to Chase, he must testify as to what she said. Still he has a gut need to help her though he believes she conceals something significant from him.

Even with readers knowing what happened, this is a pure Gold police procedural romance starring two fascinating protagonists, a hurting tweener, and a nasty spoiled ex. The story line is fast-paced from the moment Chase and Jess meet for the first in ten years while Danny lies comatose nearby and never slows down. Readers will appreciate this exciting Delta Secrets (see The One She Left Behind).

*Contain Spoilers* Honestly I could not connect to main characters at all. And while I understand wanting to protect a old friend it was very maddening the fact that chase refused to even see another option other then his own. And everyone is to just assume that Jess could do no wrong because he used to be close to her. Chase frustrated me so much I had to skip through his many arguments with his boss/dad. And I can't see how you expect us to believe that they let him be my way or the highway to his commanding officers while in the military because not once did he show any respect to even his own father. For the many romances I purchase and read on a daily basis I also want them to have a degree of beliveabilty and it just wasn't there or me in this book sorry.

The Son He Never Knew by Kristi Gold is well written,and still topical. Jess and Chase both have their sad secrets, they keep from each other. It only keeps them apart for a while. They realize they are meant to be together. Was suprised by how the plot turned out, and how the secondary characters were fleshed out also. Not just cardboard people. A good read.

Basic overview of the history of English literature and language, followed by thumbnail sketches of lasting English novels that have never been out of print. Burgess was never without something insightful and interesting to say, whether in interviews or in this basic introduction to the subject. However, reviews and commentary are limited to specifically English novels and novelists, that is, the novelists of Great Britain, e.g. Lawrence, Austen, Woolf, Waugh, Carey, Maugham, etc. Nothing on American-English authors such as Twain, Faulkner, Hemingway, Fitzgerald, etc.
