It is very moving and clear story. It astonished me how God can use such a leaflet. It moved me to tears when she wanted to share her new faith with someone who would understand her and the pastor on the telephone knew immediately what she needed. i had lost my copy and repurchased it to re-read it along with jones's later short story book: all aunt hagar's children. the 12 stories in each are linked (1-1, 2-2) in a unique conceptual manner. together the books create a fascinating picture of the 50 year 'great migration' (1915-65) wherein american cities -- and american culture -- were completely transformed by the movement of african americans from the south to the north. these two books and jones's sole novel (the known world) are all required reading for anyone interested in american slave history. or in contemporary american literature.

Really good writer - and Pulitzer agreed with the coveted prize for his next work, The Known World. These stories give us an inside look at life in Washington, DC, in the 1950's and 60's black neighborhoods. Some very poignant stories with totally believable characters.

According to General Shlomo Gazit, a former Chief of Israel Military Intelligence, Yoni had a complex personality; on the one hand, he was a superb warrior and commander, brave and devoted, yet on the other hand, he was a man blessed with many other talents, with a rich and fertile imagination and an exceptionally analytical mind. It is this breadth of character that emanates from his letters.

About the Author
Iddo Netanyahu was born in Jerusalem, Israel. After graduating from high school in the United States, where he spent part of his childhood, he returned to Israel. There he enlisted in the elite commando unit that his older brother Jonathan was to lead to Entebbe in 1976. It was during his studies at The Hebrew University School of Medicine that Netanyahu began his career as an author of short stories, novels and political articles. He divides his time between writing and working as a physician. Netanyahu lives in Jerusalem with his wife and two children.

Startling

I picked up The Letters of Jonathan Netanyahu at Ben Gurion on my way back to the states without any expectations (after all, how good can a book picked up at the airport be?)...and I was completely blown away - this is the most powerful book that I have ever read. In an age of anti-heroes and villians, where it is so easy to find moral failure in people and literature - Jonathan shines through as a star among a multitude of gray, flabby inertia. His well thought-out convictions followed by the courage to act on them to the end, despite the sacrifice that they entailed, are a standard that one should strive for. "I do not attribute value to a life without meaning," he said at 17, simply and perceptively - something that is so rare to see in people at any age, where almost everyone I know there tithers from job to job with no purpose other than the accumulation of material wealth (which inevitably doesn't make them any happier).

I think I will need a great passage of time and multiple reads before I can fully sort out my thoughts on this book. Everything from the Wars of the Jews (which are still as bitter and short-sighted as he talks about) to his contrast of the U.S. and Israel, to the quality of the people serving in the IDF, to what brings happiness and contentment to ones life, all ring true to me.

I know that there is more to say - a lot more - but I'm going to let this review stand on its own for now.

Powerful, Insightful look at the Heart of Jonathan Netanyahu

I own both the Hardcover version of this book, as well as the Kindle version.
This is an exceptional look into the life of Jonathan "Yoni" Netanyahu, gleaned from personal letters he wrote to his family and friends.
This book is not a story...the letters were not written to be published. As mentioned in one of the forwards to this book, Yoni
unknowingly penned his own autobiography.
There is so much depth to this man, who was a boy when his letters began. He had such an incredible love for his family, and his nation, that he disdained the childish and materialistic pursuits of most of the American students he was in contact with while living in the US with his family.

As I re-read Yoni"s Letters, I am blown away by how prescient and intelligent he was. His steadfastness in light of what was really important in life
is something we could only pray would return to the people of America. I could go on for pages about this collection of letters, but will stop at simply encouraging anyone who chooses, to read it and find these gems for themselves.
Many thanks to Yoni's brothers Benjamin and Iddo for searching out the letters presented here...they are golden.
Also, Herman Wouk's Introduction is the best I have ever read...a pearl in its own right.

I mentioned that I have two versions of this book, only to say that I am slightly disappointed with the editing in the ebook. There are mis-spellings, and poor paragraph breaks in certain areas. While this was translated from the Hebrew, I don't recall these problems in the hardcover

A Very Human Hero

"The Letters of Jonathan Netanyahu" is a very moving account of a young teen as he moves towards adulthood. His own words portray a life filled with duty, honor, and service to his people and his country. At the expense of his education, his marriage, and later his own life, Yoni shows by example what it means to sacrifice for a cause worth dying for. In today's American society, where young liberals question the intelligence and sanity of their friends who have enlisted in the War on Terror, I think this book should be required reading.

My heart goes out to his parents, brothers, and the people of Israel. As is obvious from these letters, they lost one of the best and brightest of his generation.

Usually this series yields better results!

We’re always on the lookout for new muffin recipes. Muffins freeze and re-toast well (and frankly, we think they taste better still frozen in the middle so we never re-toast them all the way through), so it’s easy to make them last through a week of breakfasts. We haven’t found much here to satisfy our need for breakfast muffins.

There are still a few we haven’t tried yet that look as though they might be good. The Apple Muffins, for instance; Pear and Pecan Muffins, Date and Walnut Muffins, and Raspberry Streusel Muffins. There are also a few savory muffins that might work out: Corn Muffins, Seeded Cheese Muffins, Cheese and Herb Muffins, Olive, Rosemary, and Parmesan Muffins.

Too many of the muffins are designed for desserts for our taste, as when dessert rolls around we usually have other things we’d rather make. And not all of the muffins are entirely good.

Let’s talk about the White Chocolate Muffins. Sounds fantastic, huh? Instead they’re overly buttery and not sweet enough. I don’t know if that’s a matter of not enough sugar and too much butter, or if when it says “chopped white chocolate” it really means “finely chopped white chocolate” so that it’ll be distributed better. I suspect a combination of the two is at work here. Either way, you might want to eat these half-frozen, which takes care of some of the buttery taste and makes them a little sweeter.

The Orange and Poppy Seed Muffins are good, but again, not sweet enough. Don’t get me wrong; I like food that isn’t incredibly sugary. But there are certain tastes that my taste buds associate with sweetness, and to have some of that sweetness tempting me without the rest to deliver is just frustrating.

Maybe you’ll find more of value in this cookbook than we have. Maybe you’ll appreciate the dessert muffins more than we do. But unfortunately, the flavors I’ve tasted here haven’t impressed me nearly as much as those in other cookbooks.

Recipes tasty, but not given in weight measures...naughty!!

I ordered this book on Amazon after borrowing the Australian version copy from a friend (it's out of print here as far as I can tell), and I'm sorely disappointed by the U.S. version of this book. First and foremost, the U.S. version sold here only gives measurements in cups, and those measurements don't add up to the equivalent quantities (even with the Imperial/Metric conversions) given in the Aussie book. A number of recipes have a significant larger quantity of flour or much less liquid, making the final texture of the muffin very different depending on which book you follow. The Aussie book gives measures in grams and millilitres, and for anyone who bakes in any serious way, weight measurements are always the way to go for a number of reasons. Second, there are several amusing variations in the way the text is written that are directly related to the different audiences for whom the book was written (Chocolate Chip Muffins vs. American Choc-Chip Muffins, for example). As a note here, muesli and granola aren't exactly the same thing, so again, there's a glaring cultural difference...and a slightly different muffin. I guess if I'd never had the Aussie book, the book would be all right, but since I've gotten used to baking with a scale, I am annoyed every time I flip through this book and see "1 cup melted unsalted butter". Guess I'll go through my new American copy and write in the Metric measures before I return my friend's book. Not impressed.

Le Cordon Bleu Home Collection - Muffins; a fabulous book

I have found this to be one of my most dependable muffin cookbooks. Every recipe I have tried has been a success, and people are constantly asking for a copy of the recipes (in fact, this copy is destined for a friend of mine because she has asked for so many of them!). I highly recommend this book.

Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz (1648-1695) wrote her most famous prose work, La Respuesta a Sor Filotea, in 1691 in response to her bishop's injunction against her intellectual pursuits. A passionate and subversive defense of the rights of women to study, to teach, and to write, it predates by almost a century and a half serious writings on any continent about the position and education of women. Moreover, notes Ilan Stavans in his introduction, it has become "a cornerstone of Hispanic-American identity ... at once a chronicle of the tense gender relations in the Western Hemisphere, a rich portrait of the social behavior that prevailed more than a century before independence from Spain was gained in 1810, and the very first intellectual autobiography written by a criolla in a hemisphere known for its solipsism, introversion, and allergy to public confessions. Also included in this wide-ranging selection is a new translation of Sor Juana's masterpiece, the epistemological poem "Primero Sueno", as well as revealing autobiographical sonnets, reverential religious poetry, secular love poems (which have excited speculation through three centuries), playful verses, and lyrical tributes to New World culture that are among the earliest writings celebrating the people and the customs of this hemisphere.

A superb introduction to a great mind

Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz is one of those remarkable literary figures whose extraordinary body of work forces one to either reevaluate or refine one's ideas about the complex interrelationships between religion, gender, national identity, and ethnicity. A nun who lived in seventeenth century Mexico, she distinguished herself as a poet, playwright, and prose writer.
"Poems, Protest, and a Dream" is an excellent introduction to the life and work of this fascinating woman. This selection of her works includes her famous prose piece addressed to "Sor Filotea de la Cruz," a hearty helping of her poetry, and two selections from her dramatic corpus. The bilingual format of the text, with Sor Juana's Spanish original on each even-numbered page and Margaret Sayers Peden's elegant English translation on each odd-numbered page, allows one to easily compare the two versions.
The distinguished scholar Ilan Stavans has written an extensive 32 page introduction. Stavans describes in detail the historical and cultural context from which Sor Juana wrote; his sensitive and intelligent portrait of the woman and her age made me appreciate and enjoy her writings even more.
Sor Juana takes on themes that are still relevant (and often hotly debated) more than three centuries after she wrote these works. The response to Sor Filotea is a defense of female intellectual aspiration in a male-dominated culture; in the defense Sor Juana critically responds to those who use the Judeo-Christian Bible as a tool for intimidating and marginalizing women. With certain factions of the "religious right" still using the Bible as a weapon for demonizing certain individuals and social agendas, Sor Juana's words continue to ring fresh and clear.
Equally extraordinary is Sor Juana's loa (a dramatic scene which prefaces a longer play) to "The Divine Narcissus." The loa is an allegory depicting the early contact between Christianity and the religion of the Aztecs; in this piece I detect a subtle satirical thrust which adds to the complexity of Sor Juana's vision.
Sor Juana was a masterful stylist in multiple literary genres, and her depth of psychological and moral insight adds to her stature as a literary giant. Nobody should consider herself or himself literate in the fields of women's studies or Latin American studies without having read the works of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz. "Poems, Protest, and a Dream" is an excellent resource for both independent reading and classroom use. Enjoy Sor Juana's artistry, and reflect on her ideas.

Female Intellectualism

A great intellectual is not commonly thought of to be a woman, especially in 17th century New Spain. In the midst of the highly structured Baroque literary period, an illegitimate child was baptized as Juana Ramírez de Asbaje, spent her adolescence at court, and left to become a nun where she could continue her studies in peace, rather than marrying. Although she was almost entirely self-educated, the word quickly spread of her intelligence. This caused envy and animosity towards her that she tried to avoid her entire adult life. Four years before she died, the church forced her to give up her writings and worldly studies. In her letter of response to this request, (included in the book) she became the first woman in Latin America to defend her gender's right to study and write as men could. Much of her work was commissioned, but more is being discovered of her autobiographical writings. This book includes one of the few known poems (Primero Sueño) that was not commissioned. The book is in Spanish and English on opposing pages. This is very advantageous if you are bilingual, and even if you aren't, I can't say enough about Margaret Sayers Peden's translations. Not only does she give you as close to word for word; she also preserves the original structure, themes, and rhyme schemes that are so essential in Baroque literature. Even if you go no further than this book, you will not be disappointed. It has a very complete collection of her most famous works. Unfortunately, so few people in the English-speaking U.S. has even heard of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. I was first introduced to her wonderful poetry in a Mexican History / English dyad in college. Since that first poem I read, I have been searching for books of her works, and about her life. I highly recommend the addiction.
