Pretty good book for beginners who want an overview of what software testing is

As a freelancer, one of the tasks that I have participated in was user testing. As a user tester, I provide feedback on websites and attempt to catch any flaws on a website. I came across "What is Software Testing?" and was interested in taking a deeper look at the world of software testing. This book was a nice overview of the process and philosophy behind software testing. This book helped me to get an understanding of:
* The purpose of software testing- What is a company hoping to get out of it when they conduct software testing?
* Types of software testing- What kind of testing can you do?
* The process of software testing-How does the software testing process
For beginners like me, this book provides a quick glimpse into what actually goes into testing. As a result, I have a bit more appreciation for clients that ask for my help with software testing. Trying to figure out how to prevent what's wrong with your software can be hard! I liked the way this book broke everything down to simple "layman's terms" so that it was easy to follow along with. For a topic that can be daunting for beginners, the author's language style was helpful. I'm not sure how advanced users of the book will view the book because I don't have enough experience; however those users should appreciate the brief refresher provided by this guide. They may even find a new technique or two.
There were some things in the book that could have been improved. One of those would be the addition of links within the book. As a person exploring software testing, I would definitely be interested in checking out some resources that allow me to see some of the principles discussed in the book. The authors do provide access to such resources (which they mention in several places) on the book's website-[...] but I would have preferred to see a couple of links or illustrated examples within the book itself. I also thought that some areas were a little too conversational in a few spots.
I wasn't used to that type of tone in a "technical" book.
Overall, though, I appreciated the opportunity to read a book like this. It's kind of like one of those "Teach Yourself" books that you find in the library. As a user tester, I am definitely more interested in the topic of software testing because of this book and definitely hope to take a class and read more about it. This book made me see that software testing is not as hard as I thought it was, I just need to be willing to put in the time to experiment and study.

Great introduction to testing!

Really good introduction to software testing. The book explains testing concepts using words and examples that are easy to understand for those who are not familiar with the language of testing. Great for a beginner or someone experienced who has to explain testing to the un-indoctrinated.

This book provides a clear and accessible overview of software-testing techniques and the ISTQB Foundation Level material. You'll probably want to supplement the information in this text with a more in-depth treatment to prepare for the ISTQB Foundation-level test, however.
