The best HTML5 Canvas Book!

I've read the Core HTML5 Canvas book, the For Dummies HTML5 Canvas book as well as the Canvas spec. This is by-far the best book. The book is very comprehensive and offers good examples. It also takes the time to do the JavaScript right. The book is well organized by topic and does not throw me around like the Core book. It is very in depth unlike the For Dummies book. And it has examples and explanations unlike the official spec.

This is one of the few books that will live on my desk!

The authors want to present a strong introduction to the HTML5 canvas as well as providing advice, examples, and guided tours through the deeper levels of the canvas. The book is focussed on games because, well, that's why most people want to use canvas! Even so, there is a some very focused material on video/audio/image integration which will also be great for designers.

Reactions

Fantastic job! To be honest, I hate javascript. I chose this book mostly out of curiousity. But the book is great. From start to finish, there is very little space that is not used wisely. Tons of examples, from simple standard introductions to highly instructive, complex HTML5 games. It's also an excellent tool for becoming a better game developer or programmer in general.

Conclusions

If you already know Javascript or jQuery and are interested in games or html5 apps with canvas content, this an excellent book for that.

Maybe it's me, but I didn't get as much out of this book as I expected. I think I read the first 3 chapters and found some helpful information there, but after that the book quickly launched into gaming aspects and I quit reading. Given the content of the book it should have been titled 'Canvas Gaming' or something like that. It's fine that the book is about gaming, but it was so much about gaming it didn't delve into a lot of the aspects about canvas. For example, aspects like mouse coordinates and canvas position, like relative, absolute, static, etc. I had to look aspects like that, and more, on the internet. I expected those aspects to be covered in the book. The book covered canvas basics, then quickly progressed to complex canvas aspects. It went from foundational things straight into gaming. I hoped it would have contained all the intermediate aspects too. Not everyone wants to develop a game. I don't. I need to develop a canvas for the development of image maps and signature capture. Knowing what I now know about the book I would not have purchased it. I don't think I should buy a book on canvas and then need to search the internet for answers to a bunch of canvas aspects not covered. I wanted a book to avoid that. Looking some uncommon aspects up is expected, but not the majority of those I need. And, maybe some of the aspects I need are HTML5 aspects, but they directly affect the use of canvas and need to be coded up to us canvas correctly and fully, so I expect them to be covered. Again, maybe it's just me, but that's my opinion. So, I gave the book 3 stars for - It's Okay.

In the late 1980s,while attending the University of New Mexico, I found myself in Harvena Richter's creative writing class. This book, written by her and based on her father's private notebooks, was our text. And what a text! Containing insights into how a writer's mind works, where to look for inspiration and how tough it can be be to write for a living, WRITING TO SURVIVE is where I turn when I have a creative block of any kind. It has shown me how to look at the simple and true and use them as a stepping stone to overcome whatever creative roadblock is in my path. It contains notes on writing, journal entries detailing times of despair when words would not flow...along with the joy of triumph over a sale or kind word. Conrad Richter truly wrote to survive. Times were hard and often the food on the table depended on the sale of a story. It is a insider's look at what makes a writer write and a wonderful tribute to one of the most underrated American authors...one who deserves to be rediscovered.

His Best Yet

Having read everything he has written and having great anticipation for the release of each new book he puts out, you might say that I am prejudiced to state this is definitely Blake's best work to date. As good as Red Grass River and Wildwood Boys were, this work just slightly outdistances them both in making you live the life and times of one of the great boxers in history, and following the pace of the story as it follows Ketchel as anti-hero. This is an absolutely entralling read, and the depth of research that he has undertaken to write it when combined with his gritty and realistic prose makes this a near-impossible book to put down once you pick it up. Blake has cornered the market in basing his novels on actual historical characters living on the edge of society, usually viewed in historical retrospect as less than stellar citizens, and who are ultimately pushed toward tragic ends by the circumstances of their times and the course of their self-created destiny. Why none of his works have been turned into a movie baffles me, as they are replete with action, historical detail, and pathos that would translate well to the big screen. The only bad part about reading this book is that you then have to realize that you are probably a year away for him to publish his next novel.

NOT A KNOCKOUT

This effort by the talented Mr. Blake is like watered-down tea: it's weak but it's still tea and even diluted Blake is still Blake. The author seems to have lost his trademark brutal yet almost poetical prose and has turned out a book that reads like juvenile fiction, if you take out all the sex and violence. While the romantic scenes do serve to portray Ketchel's fondness for women which ultimately did him in and the scenes of violence show the reader how tough he was in and out of the ring, they seem weakly and flatly written and repetitious. However, Mr. Blake does not pull any punches for the fight scenes: the boxing matches are quite well-penned. And a big plus is that THE KILLINGS OF STANLEY KETCHEL gives the reader a painless course in early pugilistic history. I had never heard of Stanley Ketchel before and, after reading this novel, I wonder why. Searching the internet for information about him, I learned that Stanley Ketchel may have been the best middleweight of all time. A computer simulation of a bout between him and Sugar Ray Robinson had Ketchel losing a decision and he was never knocked down by Sugar Ray. Furthermore, Ketchel fought the famous Jack Johnson, the huge heavyweight champion, and knocked him down for an eight count before foolishly dropping his guard and being knocked out by Johnson. Keep in mind that Johnson outweighed Ketchel by forty pounds in that fight and towered over him like a man over a boy. For fight fans and James Carlos Blake fans, you may want to read this book. But this is not Mr. Blake's best effort and I would steer first-time Blake readers to RED GRASS RIVER or IN THE ROGUE BLOOD or even A WORLD OF THIEVES. This one's not a knockout.

Attic Windows: A New View

This book is full of ideas on Attic Window quilts and wall hangings. The authors take the reader through colour and pattern choices, how to do an attic window and finally and great way to do binding. There are many coloured photographs using a variety of different fabrics. Included are the use of panels, using several different fabrics, applique and different size windows within a quilt or wall hanging.
I have used this book many times when doing attic windows and it has inspired me to look at this technique creatively.
If you are an avid quilter, this book is a good one to add to your collection.

Great resource

The book provides a comprehensive lesson in making the beautiful Attic Windows quilt, from the simplest version to the most complex. Includes lessons in perspective and use of tone to add depth. There are pictures of many sample quilts for inspiration, and the instructions are clear and easy to follow. I heighly recommend for quilters of all skill levels.

good book, but poorly edited

this is an essential book for the field containing all the basic theory.

therefore it's a shame it's so poorly edited. it happened me more than once that i tried to follow the equations without success only to find out after a long while that some critical assumptions are defined two paragraphs after the calculations are presented. the book also fails on giving enough physical intuition to the processes described. the math is good, but it's not enough in my opinion.
