• Unique expertise: There is a severe shortage of people qualified and able to interpret the standard. There are fewer than 800 certified auditors worldwide. The author is one of the first fully qualified assessors for the AS9100B standard (predecessor to AS9100C), having qualified in 2007. He obtained further qualification and transition training to assess AS 9100C standard in 2010 and continues to provide assessment services.
• Real-world experience: Most currently available materials for AS 9100 C are manuals and consulting packages. This book draws on the author’s significant practical experience - over 40 years in aerospace quality assurance (both for aircraft and for aero-engines) and 5 years consulting and certification services with organizations in multiple industries.
• Readily usable materials: Some guidelines and templates are available – however, these guidelines are usually theoretical rather than experience-based, templates provided are too generic and getting either of these requires signing up for expensive consultancy services. The book has multiple templates that have been customised to suit aerospace manufacturers, their suppliers and the aerospace industry in general, with case studies of real-world implementations.
• Long-lasting relevance: The Standard undergoes revision approximately every six years. The last revision was made in 2009. The next revision process is likely to be launched in 2013/14 and released in 2015/16. However the next revision is expected to be minor so this book will continue to be relevant.
About the Author: K. T. Thomas retired as Deputy Director/Principal Scientific Officer in Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance, Ministry of Defence, India in 2006 after nearly 40 years of experience. He has over 28 years of quality assurance experience with the development, production and overhaul of aircraft and aero-engines of the Indian Air Force from trainers to frontline fighters. He is a certified Lead Auditor for ISO-9001:2008 and ANAB approved/IAQG OASIS registered Aerospace Industry Experienced Auditor for AS 9100 Rev C. Over the past seven years, he has conducted more than 370 audits and training courses and presented papers at national/international conferences. He is the author of ‘Safety Follows Where Quality Leads’ (2010; nearly 1000 copies sold).
