About the Author
Washington Irving Was born in New York City in 1783. He lived in the United States, England, and Spain (where he served as an American diplomatic attache). A prolific author, Irving wrote The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., Diedrich Knickerbocker's History of New York, The Alhambra, and biographies of George Washington and Christopher Columbus, among other works. He is best remembered, however, for his two most famous stories, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle."

If you're a lover of a

Washington Irving was once a really popular American author. Now he's almost forgotten. Except in Granada, Spain. He lived in the famous site of the Alhambra almost 200 years ago and wrote of his experiences there. He was a great lover of stories, and he includes in the book some of the stories and legends he was told there, tales of ghostly happenings, warriors imprisoned in caves for hundreds of years, betrayals and successes of the rich and the poor.
If you ever plan to visit the Alhambra, do read this book. In Granada you can buy it in the original English, in Spanish, German, French and Italian. It's the perfect complement to this famous place.

Fascinating Stories

Washingrton Irving is a gifted writer who makes you feel like you are living in the 19th century in the Alhambra. I loved reading about this amazingly beautiful place that I had just visited. He made it come alive to me all over again.

Funny, informative, well-written

I bought a copy of this book at a gift shop at the Alhambra in fall 2010, read it on the train back from Granada. It was definitely a unique experience to read the book after visiting the setting itself.
Irving relates some very interesting stories of his own experiences including humourous character sketches and sweeping scenery descriptions. Don't read this book like a tour book... obviously Spain has changed immensely since the time of its writing. Irving also collects some very interesting legends of the Moorish/Arabic community from Andalusia. His tale of the Legend of Prince Ahmed Kamel could be turned into a Disney movie with just a few musical numbers thrown in for good measure.
Overall, a very enjoyable read!
