A Fun Read

Natasha Hemingway, a psychic and clairvoyant, lives in Chicago where she consult with the detectives of SUIT (Supernatural Unit Investigation Team). In this alternate world shapeshifters and vampires live openly with humans. Natasha is romantically involved with two nosferatu, Darian, a powerful master vampire, and his companion Xavier. To her horror Natasha learns that her dearest friend, Annette, has been brutally murdered, and the police have blamed Darian. Now she, Xavier, and two clever wereleapords must discover the truth. Their adventure takes them to Russia and into the heart of a vicious mafia. The Guilty Innocent is a fun read with an engaging heroine and plenty of action and romance.

Exhilerating!

I greatly enjoyed this book, I couldn't put it down. I really enjoyed the first book, even though it had errors, the story was just what I'd been looking for in a novel, so I was more than pleased. I didn't really notice any errors in this installement. I'm sure many who've read the first book is wondering about that. This book is a lot better as far as the editing. The writing was fresh and well paced. I had no idea what to expect in this second novel. I'm a huge fan of the earlier Laurell K. Hamilton books and was looking for a new author to keep me entertained in this genre, I'd recommend D.N. Simmons to anyone in the same boat.

What I liked most about this story is that even though it was told from Natasha's point of view, the story focused on so many other characters. In this book you get to learn a lot of John, the sexy manager at Desires Unleashed, Xavier, and Elise. New characters are introduced and they are filled to the brim with personality! Devin has got to be one of my all time favorite characters. I think the real heros of this book are Xavier and Sergio. Natasha's inner monologues are funny and insightful, it's through her curiosity that you learn more about the others.

I think this is a credit to D.N. Simmons's writing style. It's not at much sex in this book as in Desires Unleashed, but the sex scenes that you do have are extremely steamy and shocking. This book focused more on action and that was right up my alley.

It had just the right amount of humor, gore, eroticism and action to make a winning combination.

I am definitely looking forward to the third installment and this is really a keeper!

I was expecting nothing less than perfect

D.N. Simmons delivers yet again, another well thought-out plot with the perfect mixture of horror, action, suspense, sex and romance. This book follows up with several characters from Desires Unleashed. Natasha's best friend is missing and Darian, who is one of the hottest, toughest and sexiest vampire master to EVER grace this genre is arrested for murder because some pretty bad guys wanted him out of the way so that they could do their dirt. Natasha along with Xavier, Elise , Sergio, John and Devin go on a mission to clear Darian of murder charges before 7 days are up.

I'm an extremely picky reader, I don't like half-stepping. I don't like when sex replaces plot in a novel. I don't like half-baked characters that are boring as all hell to read or "Mary Sues." and I don't like unrealistic dialogue or plot scenarios. I see far too many books that have taken this road and it is extremely refreshing to come across an Author like D.N. Simmons who when you read her novels, you see the amount of effort she put into bringing the story and characters to life and at the same time is able to suck you into her world where you don't want to leave. Anne Rice had this same effect on me too.

Someone else mentioned this, and I'm going to concur. The Guilty Innocent; Knights of the Darkness Chronicles book two was a credit to D.N.'s writing style. I've read many books, mainly by LKH where the story is told through the eyes on one person and everything seems to react only to that one person or they exist only for that one person to be larger than life.

That is not the case with Natasha. D.N. uses Natasha's "eyes" to introduce the reader to the other characters, to see deeper into who they are and why they do what they do. I have a better understanding of the characters now. So much was revealed in this book and you learn so much more about both vampires and shapeshifters.

As always, D.N. delivers some of the hottest and erotic bite and sex scenes ever with great detail. This book was extremely hard to put down and the only reason I did was because I didn't want it to end and that was when I had one more chapter to go.

D.N. is an author I would highly suggest checking out, especially if you're looking for something out of the ordinary. I have no doubt in my mind that The Royal Flush isn't going to be anything less than spectacular!

i was able to play most of these songs but some of the musicdidnt even sound right and i could clearly see they were just plane wrong. if you watch videos of playing you can clearly see there not playing the same cord patterns as in this book

About the Author
Ken Matejka (J.D., LL.M in Taxation) has been a California attorney for 26 years and is a former-member of the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Lawyer Referral and Information Services. For 17 years, he worked at the Lawyer Referral and Information Service of the Bar Association of San Francisco and for many years there, as LRIS Operations Manager, he was chiefly responsible for advertising the LRIS, including actively managing its Google advertising. In 2007, he left the Bar Association of San Francisco to found a search engine advertising company dedicated to helping lawyers and lawyer referral services get more clients through Google advertising. After seven years there as its president and CEO, he moved on to launch the more specialized Matejka Marketing, Inc. (http://www.matejkamarketing.com). Ken has overseen the creation of numerous Google advertising and social media campaigns for law firms and bar associations, including the delivery of over 1 billion law-related ads in Google. As a CLE presenter, Ken has given many seminars and webinars for about 20 bar associations in six states on the topics of website lead-generation for lawyers and related ethical issues. Ken grew up in Rockford, Illinois and graduated from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1985, he relocated to San Francisco to attend the University of California, Hastings College of the Law and he completed the masters in taxation program at New York University in 1989.

A masterpiece of common sense based on reality

I haven't read the entire book, but as one who's owned businesses and been involved with marketing for several decades, this book is like a breath of fresh air in comparison with the nonsense spewing from advertising agencies about "building your brand" and promoting your "image".
The chapter on "thin markets" is something every business owner, not just lawyers, should understand clearly and thoroughly. The money you save by being this smart will pay off hugely.

They don't teach this stuff in college marketing and advertising classes. Why? The profs can't teach what they don't know from first-hand experience.

I found it very useful. Every lawyer should read it before launching his website to have the basics in online marketing. At the same time the book gave lot of tips how to improve existing web presence, too. I especially liked the idea of "Online Ecosystem" that explains how your website and other online platforms, like Youtube, social media, etc. should work together. I wish I had read this book 5 years earlier!

Is there a 6 star rating? This book demystifies all things online marketing. Before reading it, I was overwhelmed by the regiment of tweaking the web site, grabbing cheesy stock photos, paying for Facebook likes, with no real goal anf all but ignoring other social media, including Google Plus! I finished it a week ago and now I feel like my IT guy and I speak the same language.

Excellent book for learning the Norwegian language.

This book is the best I have come across for learning the language. It begins with simple situations and continues to more difficult subject matter in easy to take steps. HOWEVER: Except for a few footnotes in English, the book is written in Norwegian -- instructions for exercises, grammar explanations, and all are in Norwegian. Of course this is a great help in itself.
There is an excellent Norwegian to English lexicon with the proper use of verb endings and noun usage and included for each verb and noun. In addition there are many examples of idiomatic usage included for various nouns, verbs, and prepositions.
I recommend it for anyone who is an intermediate student.

Oldie... but goodie...

After completing Hippocrene's Beginner's Norwegian and Teach Yourself Norwegian, I was in somewhat of a rut for quite a while. There really aren't any readily available intermediate Norwegian courses out there (that I could find). Listening to Norwegian internet radio, reading Norwegian newspapers, and watching Norwegian TV helps, but can be frustrating because it's a BIG jump from the elementary courses. I had a copy of this book lying around, but I assumed that since I'd completed several other Norwegian courses, I wouldn't get anything out of this text.

Boy, was I wrong. I'm about half way through now, and I can say that it is absolutely excellent. There is no vocabulary overload (a problem with most other language courses I have--and I have lots of them!), concepts are introduced and then constantly reviewed as part of later exercises (most books introduce a topic and you don't see it again... and of course, forget about it), and best of all, there are TONS of exercises (most other courses are pathetically skimpy with exercises).

In fact, the approach that this author takes is to give short dialogs and readings for the reader to analyze (containing new topics) and follows them with many, many helpful exercises. You sort of make connections and deductions as you go through the problems. It's a sort of "learning by discovery" approach--a very "active" learning style. It's written entirely in Norwegian (except occasional footnotes) and forces you to think. And like I said, once something is introduced, you are not allowed to forget it. It just keeps coming up. Of course, this approach burns a lot of paper up! The book is nearly 600 pages--most of it exercises. However... GUARANTEED that you'll remember this stuff with this approach! I think one reason that newer texts don't take this "active," exercise-happy, discovery approach is that they are too cheap! ...cut all the exercises out and save a lot of money in publishing cost... or cut it all out and call it an audio-based course :-)

Granted, I don't think this style of teaching will appeal to everyone. But it sure appeals to me. I wish I could find texts written like this one in other languages that I study. Also, I probably wouldn't recommend this book to a complete beginner. I think it might be a bit intimidating at first. But if you've gone through TY Norwegian or Hippocrene's Beginner's Norwegian, and you learn well visually, analytically, and by example, by all means give this book a try! Also, since the book is quite old, the audio is very hard to find. You should have the sound of the language in your head before starting with this book if you can't find the audio. I don't have it, but it's no disadvantage at all since the other courses I've done have quite a lot of audio.

An added benefit is that once you've completed this book, there is another more advanced text that follows (by the same author). Bottom line: for traditional/analytical style learners, this is THE book. You want this book.

Addendum (fall 2015): I am revisiting this text to brush up, since I've forgotten a lot since I made the first review above. I want to add that the U of Wisconsin now offers the audio to this book as a download in their internet book store. I wish I would have had the audio the first time around years ago. It is EXCELLENT and offers not only audio to the book dialogues but also has some extra audio exercises not found in the book--and some great dictation exercises as well for better understanding. It's definitely worth getting. At this point, after having used the audio in conjunction with the book, I'd say it's vital. It makes things so much more complete and "real" when you can hear it.

My opinion that this is the best Norwegian book out there has not changed since my first review. There are a couple of good offerings that have come along since, that I'd recommend as supplemental to this text, but none have come even close to being as good of an all-purpose text that takes you well beyond the beginner stage as this one does. I still think a good combo for the beginner is, first, Beginning Norwegian (Hansen) and then this text. I'd say a good supplement from the newer stuff is "The Mystery of Nils" (I'm not as fond of the pedagogy; however, it is an interesting and fun story and a helpful resource). But I'd use this text as the primary and that one as added reading/exposure.

Snakker du norsk?

Maybe it's the class I'm taking...but I find Norsk, nordmenn og Norge to be one of the nicest language textbooks I've ever used. It's not fancy...not in color...but the lessons are clear...broken up into understandable chunks...and the book's refusal to use English...while daunting at first...eventually forces you to learn the vocabulary quickly. The class I'm taking also requires the workbook...which is a good complement to the main textbook. (There's a set of audio files available from the publisher's website that are also handy.)

About the Author
Bernard Laurance is a self-taught cook who has been experimenting with recipes since the age of seven. He has traveled extensively, seeking out authentic recipes in all corners of the world. Delicious recipes and beautiful book too!

I LOVE this book! It's such a fun and simple cookbook with outstanding recipes. My favorite recipe (so far!) has to be the 'Scandalous Orange Tart' as it is a wonderful twist on a classic lemon tart with added zest and has certainly been a favorite of my friends! The whole book from start to finish is a great way to learn about elements of cooking from around the world and the author, Bernard Laurance, clearly knows his stuff! Other highlights from this book include: The Praline Cream-filled Choux pastries and Moroccan biscotti.

Bought this as a gift for my sister and the whole family love it - the recipes have indeed been fine-tuned to perfection. The classics - cherry clafoutis, tarte tatin, etc. - are done really well but we also loved the new finds: giant praline sandwich cookies and Indian semolina carrot cake among them!

No idea why this was published when

ROGUE'S REFORM (ASIN: 0373834586) was published containing the stories of all three Lester siblings. Ah well, if you have this and love Laurens, you might want to read it just to complete your reading of all the Laurens books and short stories around.
Just don't expect the early Laurens and the Laurens of the Bar Cynster series to be the same, in terms of sensuality, alpha-heroes, tortured heroes, whatever.

DON'T BUY the Same Book Twice!

If you have lately come to be a reader of Stephanie Laurens, DON'T make the mistake of going back to buy this. It contains two of the three stories republished in 2000, in "Rogues' Reform". They were so forgettable the first time I read them, that I got twenty pages into this book before I sensed some awful deja vu....

DENNIS JAY KENNEY, a veteran of eight years of police service, is Director of Research and Planning for the Savannah, Georgia, Police Department.

James O. Finckenauer is Professor Emeritus and a Professorial Fellow at Rutgers University-Newark, and author or co-author of many books, including Asian Transnational Organized Crime. Professor Finckenauer was formerly Director of the International Center at the National Institute of Justice, and is past President of the International Association for the Study of Organized Crime and of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.

A detailed look at the origins of organized crime in Americas with a chapter on Pirates, who were the first on our soil. Although it is dated (1995), the book gives an accurate description of how organized crime began, what it is, who is doing it and what is being done to combat it.
